food stamps...

are they really all that bad...? It seems like you can only buy nasty food with food stamps and nothing else, seems like you can't buy very good food with foodstamps and doesn't provide enough benefits.

What about people with low income jobs that are perpetually off their feet, yet still work everyday?

What if they already live in low income housing and do not drive a vehicle?

I used to work at a drugstore, and people with the Quest cards (food stamps credit cards) could buy anything as long as it wasn't something made in the store (like if we sold hot pretzels or cups of soda or something), and as long as it was actually food. This was a few years ago, though, so things may have changed.

are you saying it is impossible for people working minimum wage jobs to afford a low income apartment and basic food? if so, they need to work more than 8 hours a day

Sometimes it is...

Lets say a person working a minimum wage job pulls down 800/mo after taxes. Single parent family with 2 kids. Rent anywhere around me for a 2-br apartment is 1k/mo. Lets be nice and say they pay 650/mo. That leaves 150 left for bills (heating/electric) and food. If you have 2 kids to raise working more then 40-hrs a week will just perpetuate the cycle. Sometimes they cant... sometimes they have infants.

do the math son, a place to live better than most people in the world have and enough food to live a healthy lifestyle are affordable to someone with an 8 hour job. if you want more than that, do something to dig yourself out, like working more and saving. a ton of the people on this forum work part time and go to an engineering school full time, that's > 12 hours a day. most poor americans would rather complain that the government is treating them unfairly.

Why yes, yes it is impossible to earn minimum wage, and afford housing, bills and food. And like necine said, especially if they have kids. I've worked with people who worked 2+ jobs to support themselves, and they were always exhausted. Minimum wage definitely needs to be increased.

The thing is that the programs don't hurt anybody. Only those that qualify get benefits.

If you don't like the rules, think they're too lax, too many cheaters.. etc.. you have the power to change things through your chosen elected officials.

Or at least, that's how it's supposed to work.. lol

I was behind a girl the other night at the Qwik-Stop, she used her access card (food stamp CC) to buy chips, donuts and sodas. Looked like OK food to me

She saved the cash she had to buy the beer and cigarettes.

I just love a quality goverment program.

I work almost-fulltime and go to school. I make $10 hr and it's hard to cover bills sometimes.

Average Monthly income: 1,000
Rent: 240
Insurance: 200
Food: 150
CC Debt: 700

Plus I pay my own tuition and other expenses. My average day is work + school + homework. It's not that easy sometimes. I don't have health benefits as they would cost me 200/mo from my employer. Doctor visits, car maintence... etc. Times are tight but hopefully when I finish school in approximately 2 years I'll make some decent money.

Edit: CC Debt has been accumulated buying books and paying tuition for school.

How many adults do you know who earn minimum wage? Probably very few if any.

If you increase minimum wage... prices will increase...

Increasing minimum wage wouldn't do a damn thing to help these people. If you do increase minimum wage, you're essentially making otherwise unskilled jobs go to skilled workers. If you have to pay someone a higher wage, you're going to be more selective in hiring, right? So are you going to hire any random person that works into the store, or are you going to take longer in hiring someone and be much more selective? So the people you're trying to help, the unskilled, uneducated individuals, are going to apply for these jobs in greater numbers, yet won't get these jobs.

Also, you're not going to want to higher as many people. Nor are you going to be willing to have people work as many hours.

On top of that, other ways that businesses compensate for a higher minimum wage is passing the cost associated with it onto the customer.

So essentially, you're right back where you started.

you people need to take econ 101. increasing minimum wage means a certain percentage of the people who work minimum wage now will lose their jobs. supply and demand curves. the average poor person will make more, but more will have no job at all. minimum wage hurts the economy and poor people
