(CNN) -- Nearly 30 elementary school children in the Philippines have died after eating fried cassava balls obtained from a vendor, a spokesman for the local mayor told CNN.

Fourteen children died Wednesday before reaching hospitals and 13 died upon arrival, the spokesman for Mabini Mayor Eutiquio Bernales said.

Two more children also have died, but it was not clear when. Thirty-five more are in critical condition.

The victims suffered severe stomach pain, then vomiting and diarrhea after eating the snack during morning recess, The Associated Press reported.

They were taken to at least four hospitals near the school in Mabini, a town on Bohol Island, about 610 kilometers (380 miles) southeast of Manila, AP said.

"Some said they took only two bites because it tasted bitter and the effects were felt 5-10 minutes later," Dr. Harold Gallego of Garcia Memorial Provincial Hospital in the nearby town of Talibon told AP.

The vendor who sold the cassava balls insisted nothing was wrong with them and ate a few to prove the point. Now she, too, is in critical condition.

All of the children were in the first and second grades of San Jose Elementary School in Mabini. Francisca Doliente AP that her 9-year-old niece Arve Tamor was given some of the deep-fried caramelized cassava by a classmate who bought it from a regular vendor outside the San Jose school.

"Her friend is gone. She died," Doliente said, adding that her niece was undergoing treatment.

Grace Vallente, 26, said her 7-year-old nephew Noel died en route to the hospital and that her 9-year-old niece Roselle was undergoing treatment.

"There are many parents here," AP quoted her as saying from L.G. Cotamura Community Hospital in Bohol's Ubay town.

"The kids who died are lined up on beds. Everybody's grief-stricken."

Cassava is a starchy, tuberous root that is a low-cost source of carbohydrates in humid, tropical areas; it is also the source of tapioca.

Cassava contains amino acid-derived cyanogenic glucosides -- some more than others -- and must be thoroughly cooked to remove toxic levels.

Eaten raw, the human digestive system will convert part of it into cyanide. Two cassava roots contain enough to be fatal.

Lemme get this straight... They have a vegetable (root or whatever), that needs to be thouroughly cooked, otherwise it is like eating cyanide? And they serve this to kids? Hmmm....

poor kids, and vendor... Maybe the broiler wasn't hot enough to cook through the insides enough for a few minutes, enough to color the outsides... those vending carts are a health hazard anyway but with the broiler hot enough it'd kill the germs and make some mighty tasty food... I miss eating at the vending carts in Thailand... can't get much more authentic than that...

my bet is the vendor tried to deep fry too many at one time to serve so many kids, which is why the temp dropped... Yuca Frita or Mandioca Frita... the pics look interesting http://www.donpedro.cz/kol3.JPG looks a little like french fries(freedom fries?)

Reminds me of an elected official who claimed that the Houston ship channel wasn't contaminated. They went swimming to prove the point, and ended up in the hospital. It may be an urban legend, but a professor mentioned it in school several years ago.

Aren't there a lot of foods that are like this? IIRC, cashews are poisonous if not thoroughly cooked as well.

Tapioca ... cyanide... WTF?!?!?

I so used to love tapioca pudding.. I don't think I'll ever touch it again. 🙁

Btw, that reminds me of the time I ordered a McChicken sandwich at McD's, and it was mfg'ed wrong, and there were actually two chicken patties, breaded together. Well, they put it into the cooker for the "standard time", and I didn't realize it immediately, but.. the inside section of both was totally raw. Not good. (I probably might have been able to sue, but I'm not exactly that type. In hindsight, I probably should have anyways. Could have made a cool few Gs, after the lawyer pocketed the other 90% from the out-of-court settlement.)

You have to cook cashiews? WTF???

Why am I only learning about these dangerous foods now, after eating them for years. This is an interesting, if disturbing, thread. :|

Do you mean the pulp itself, or the inner part which is the base for chocolate?
