A co-worker brought in some food from the local russian market. Some handmade beef sausage and some pork sausage, along the lines of american summer sausage with a distinctive flavor. Another product was what I would basically consider salted belly fat. that was sliced in the same manner as the sausage. You could see the layering of the skin muscle and what not. The bread looked to be surprisingly healthy from the ingredients. Dark whole grain with no preservatives or high fructoses products. A little cucumber too. I sampled a little of everything. Just missing the Vodka I think.

All in all, tasty stuff. Still, I wonder at my chances of having ingested a tapeworm from the pork.

The bread is the best. Of all the products in the US, I was appalled by the poor choice of bread.
But not any more!

Some Laotian workers that graded shang for my dad brought fried half duck skulls once...

I to this day don't understand how they could eat them...

Yeah, bread in America sucks. That's why you don't see bread lines in the US :D

:) That's from a long time ago when there was a big flame war here about it. I should probably remove it by now, but I don't have any worthy quote to replace it with.

Trader Joes has "European Style" bread. It's more German than Russian, but it tastes much better than American breads. Higher density and flavor.

Oh, it exists... it exists...

LOL, he needs to start watching Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern.

And Russian food is awesome, I love going to parties at restaurants in Brighton Beach with Russian friends.

Ah, the "salted belly fat" :p It's called "Saalo" Yeah I never understood why it's popular in Russia. I guess it contains a lot of calories and when there was a shortage of food, just a few small pieces could boost calorie count. But I'm guessing it's more than just belly fat, there's a special technique in preparing it, because regular fat makes me literally want to throw up/gag, but saalo wouldn't (it's more solid/more taste, etc). :p I wouldn't eat it, but there was a time in my distant past where I ate a few pieces :D
I know that good Russian food exists, but I'm not very knowledgable about food in general..
