Food/biology question: how do you get sick off of spoiled food that's cooked?

assuming bacteria in spoiled food (like ground beef) makes you sick, what happens if you cook the food to the point where it kills the bacteria. can the food still make you ill?

what about some uncooked ground beef that's been in the fridge for a while?

Ask yourself this, do you feel lucky? The heat probably will kill the bacteria, but might not break down the poisons released previously by the bacteria. You don't get sick from the bacteria, you get sick from the poisons.

As long as you cook it thoroughly, you should be fine.

Eat some cooked, spoiled food and let us know how it goes.

it will still make you sick because most likely the bacteria will produce toxic substances (think bacterium sh*t), and you cant get rid of it with cooking. Also, some bacteria can resist heat, you need an autoclave to kill it.

Is it all brown (where it was red when you bought it)? I wouldn't eat if so.

well, my son wanted sloppy joes for lunch and i had some ground beef in the fridge that's been there for about a week. to be safe, i'd rather not experiment on him :)

thanks for the info, guys.

it isn't in a clear package. i'll open it up and take a look.....is that a guide to knowing if ground beef is spoiled?

i can never tell by the smell...i always convince myself it smells bad if i'm looking for it.

I don't know if color change in the beef means anything, actually. It just seems gross to eat food that has changed color from it's optimal state :p

We had some ground beef that started red, but was brown-gray and smelled a little off when took it out of the fridge. Once it was on the pan and started heating up, it started smelling like poo. We didn't eat it.

Just smell it.

Color is not an indicator, unless it's white or purple or something.

You'll be able to tell in a heartbeat if it's bad by smelling it.

Well listen, if you think the food might be spoiled then don't eat it. One of the worst food poisoning strains is Staphylococcus aureus and it just so happens that the thing is resistant to many forms of antibiotics now. During CLS training we plated strains of this thing and a lot of the time it was resistant to antibiotic testing and so if someone has a really bad strain, it's goodnight my someone goodnight for them.
