every month, we have a couple of cakes that come in for everyone for that months birthdays.

the announcement gets made over email.

seemingly "too busy for questions" engineers suddenly drop everything they are doing an d bolt for the cake room.

within 3 minutes of the email, the hallway to the room is packed.

does this happen at your work?

:p

just thought it was kinda funny how people go nuts over free food

no, too small of an office. but it reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where there are always at least 3 cakes at Elaine's office everyday!... get well cakes, happy birthday, good bye...
LOL!
I wish we had that.
cannot go wrong with free food for a mid-morning or mid afternoon snack :D

Cakes, potlucks, luncheons, etc.

Most offices have them and they get to be a real PITA after a while.

I see that engineering hasn't changed since I quit working. ;)

No, most of us here dislike cake at work now. We get it at least once or twice a month.

I haven't had an office job or anything (still in school), but to me the food invitation in school (I assume it applies to offices) always seemed more like an excuse to stop working and have some friendly chatter while engorging on unhealthy food. The free food is definitely beautiful, but it's also a casual social occasion, however common/rare or brief it may be.

the place where i work over the summers pays for employee's lunches in order to keep them in the office and productive. They order from a few places every day, so I suppose it is no big deal.

One or two pieces of whatever was left in the lounge is usually all that's left... then nobody wants to eat the last few, so I always take one.

We had a guy pull a pizza box out of the trash can to eat the last piece of pizza that was being thrown away.
He is an engineer.

Around here it is like the scarabs from The Mummy. We all move it, and in five seconds there is nothing but crumbs. We dont have the clicking noises like them, but you get the idea.
