Following up with Job Interview

Hey guys,

I interviewed for a job at a clinical research center two weeks ago on the 30th that I really liked. It's been about two weeks and I haven't heard anything back from the hiring manager. I sent them a nice thank you email directly afterwards and I called my interviewer about a week ago asking about the status of the position and when I could possibly here back. The hiring manager told me she was interviewing someone else that day and she could possibly still be interviewing others but didn't give me a good answer to my question.

It's been another week since the last time I called and I'm feel apprehensive/nervous everytime I think about the position. To make matters worse I need to hear back soon because of a few other positions I should be hearing back from soon. Would it be too much if I called her again tomorrow morning to ask about the position. I just want to get an approximate (if not exact) date I can expect to hear back by and to also reaffirm my interest in the position. However, I don't want to sound like a pest and drive them away.

Any opinions?

I think it reasonable to call and ask what the status is of the hiring process. Have they completed interviews? Have the hired a suitable candidate? If not complete, can they estimate when they may be in a position to take the next step (whatever that is)? Polite and quick so as not to waste the company person's time - unless, of course, that person indicates an interest in further conversation. Once week is about as often as I'd go though. You can be guided when next to call by their answer to the question about when they expect to make their next move.

Sometimes it's better to just let it go and assume you're not going to get it. I know at my current job I had a phone interview with HR, then about 6 weeks later finally got a call back for a personal interview, then didn't hear back until about a month after that when they offered me the job. It was just a busy time and they had to jump through a lot of loop holes to finish the hiring process.

I follow up once or twice max unless I hear something concrete from them.

Anything more than that, they don't want you. Think of it this way: if they wanted you, wouldn't they be calling you and be all over you?

Wait until you hear back from the other places. Then, call this one back. You'll be a lot better informed at that point.

I wouldn't call back a place more than twice.
