Follow-Up Test: 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP

NFS4

No Lifer
Just for sh!ts and giggles

What Works:
V8 rumble, comfortable seats, agreeable highway ride.

What Needs Work:
Clumsy handling, lackluster fit and finish, overpowering torque steer, numb steering feel.

Bottom Line:
The V8 power is nice, but the GXP just can't compete with its rear-wheel-drive rivals.

Leave it to GM to put a V8 in a FWD car. I think if I were on the board of GM, I'd have to vote to ditch Bob Lutz, who brought a lot of hype but has done little to better the company as far as I can see.

I'm sorry, but Bob Lutz is a car guy and the Grand Prix GXP doesn't sound like a Lutz idea.

I bet if you go ove to www.clubaztec.com you'd find people porking their car's exhaust pipes.

Bottom line, the Grand Prix GT is a subpar mid-size sedan no matter which way you slice it from fit and finish to materials quality to build quality to engine refinement to ride and handling to resale value.

Accords, Camrys, Altimas and Mazda 6's tear it up from the smaller side, while Avalons and Maximas will ass handle it if you want something a little bigger. In regards to the GXP, you have the the Charger R/T and 300C would be the sh!t out of it.

Then there's also the Subaru Legacy GT and G35 to consider along with the Acura TL if you're looking to throw down $32k

Lutz had said the new Grand Prix was Pontiac's BMW 3 Series fighter.

With a V6 that Automobile Mag says sounds like farm equipment and a 4-speed auto I am sure gives Helmut nightmares.

Lutz arrived AFTER the new Grand Prix was set in stone. He had no input on it as far as I know. The G6 was the first production vehicle that he was able to have any kind of input on AFAIK. Lutz talking about the Grand Prix and singing its praises are to be expected from someone in his position. It's not like he's gonna tell the press that it's a piece of sh!t 😀

Although he does have 3 BMWs and a Mercedes registered in his name...

Didn't he used to work for BMW?

I'm currently driving a Grand Prix GXP rental car while my Envoy's tailgate is getting replaced (someone at the dealership backed into it while buying it...long story). Anyway, it has a cool heads-up display, and the seats fit you like a glove, but what they said about the steering is true. AWFUL handling on turns...you almost have to arm wrestle the wheel when going around those circle entrance ramps on the highways. It MOVES on the straightaway though. It's an automatic and I bet it'll do 0-60 in the low 7's. The car has 19K miles on it and it creaks like crazy over bumps though. Probable would drive you nuts in anothe 10K miles.

Don't think I would get one, but it's fun to drive for a while.

you'd all have to admit that about the only place domestic vehicles sell in numbers is the midwest

the flat, curveless midwest
