yesterday i needed to know how to make a cale crossover, but i determined i didn't need that after all....however, i know that my straight through cable works in a shorter version i made. I think my internet upstairs doesn't work, becuase the cable is too long (over 150ft), and the signal that my server is giving may not be strong enough....is there a way I can amplify the network signal? The reason I think it may be the signal strength, is because upstairs right now I get an alternating message every other second saying "network cable unplugged > connection enabled > network cable unplugged > connection enabled, and so on....i will be very greatful if i get internet upstairs working. Thx.

I don't know the solution for your problem but I think network cables over 100 meters won't do any good.

edit: i was wrong about feet, changed that to meters :)

There are some REALLY helpful people in Networking that very rarely post over here (JackMDS comes to mind). If you need an instant answer, use google, otherwise waiting for an answer when you post in the right forum isn't going to kill you.

Back to your question, 150feet isn't too long of a cable run. The maximum length of cat5e should be about 100 meters. I've got about a 200foot run of cable here and it works fine. If you made the cable, check it with a tester if you have one, you might have exposed too much of the wire for the connection and that could be causing your problems.

Max length is 100 meters. 150' is FAR from that distance. Are you sure the cable was crimped properly?

I recrimped it, and it is crimped properly, but still doesn't work...i'll try to recrimp it yet again...

If you can find one in the right length, try a premade cable. Also, make sure the cable is routed as far from sources of electromagnetic interference as possible. Does it work if you manually force the NIC to make a connection at 10BASE-T?

Do you have a mini-switch you can put in the middle? do a 75' run to the switch then 75' to the PC
