Let me pass on some words of wisdom that were told to me before I headed off to Boot Camp by my (then) Marine Brother-in-Law.

The best way to make it through Boot Camp with the LEAST amount of getting your ass kicked is, don't be TOO good and don't be TOO bad. If you stay somewhere in the middle you become less of a target and your life will be much more pleasant during boot camp! ;)

Edit: And feel free to pass on that little bit of Marine history I passed on to you earlier today. Most Marines would probably enjoy knowing some Marine history that is not so well known and maybe it could earn you a brownie point or two. ;)

As someone who spent eight years in the Marines, I have nothing but respect for someone who can sign on the dotted line with everything that is going on today. Good luck friend and remember that what you do as a Marine will stay with you forever.

That said; let me give you a glimpse of what you will be doing over the next five years.

First off, keep telling yourself that boot camp is 80% mental 20% physical. The idea is to change the way you think. This will happen without you realizing it. What one of the other posters said is correct. Try to say in the middle of the pack and you shouldn?t have any problems. This can backfire sometimes as one Sunday near the end of boot camp; I was washing my utilities in the sink outside of the barracks when from the 3rd floor I hear one of my drill instructors yell my name. I spent the next hour being ?pitted? by him only because he had noticed that I had never been in trouble.

After boot-camp, you will go through combat training. If you?re into shooting the big guns, this can be a bit of fun. For the most part though, you will learn what will seem like 90% of your career, ?hurry up and wait?.

After that, it?s gravy. School will be hard, but with your collage background, it shouldn?t be too bad. Just follow the rules and use common sense and you shouldn?t have any problems.

Expect to be bossed around?a lot.

Don?t be a kiss ass.

Take the initiative when possible and you will advance quickly.

If you find yourself in a situation that what you are doing doesn?t make any sense?don?t worry, that?s normal.

Stay safe.

What does an E-2 do?

My friend in the Corp was on his first day of fixing APCs and one of his fellow Marines told him to go to an office and ask for damn E4 (or 5?) that works. Luckily the sergeant just laughed.

Kind of like getting some flight line or prop wash.

I dont know why you post this drivel. Like giving someone the advice "don't get killed" will actually change anything. Anyways, how is he crazy for having the balls to serve his country? You are crazy for not!

Sounds like you're going into Aviation? Have fun in Pensacola, FL. if so.

Going Parris Island, or San Diego? The Island has sand fleas (worst enemy known to man) SD has hills.

The backbone of the Corps. 0311 is Infantry, everything else supports the 0311.

Oh, and don't forget, MARINE is an acronym.

True. But we dont do anything, but joy ride. Eat and workout. Navy has to do all the work. Nothin but a free ride for us.

Listen to LoganP, all of what he said was the truth. Boot camp is mostly mental. Its not hard physically at all. At least not for me. Some fatties had a hard time. I personally thought there wasnt enough physical nature to it. Being pitted and quarterdecked does nothing but make you stronger, remember that. Its not much fun when you're up there, but it makes you stronger, and have more endurance. If you go to Parris Island, you may not PT that much. There will be lots of black flags, and you cant PT with that out.

Learn your general orders, before you go in. Learn your ranking system, before you go in. They will say, "E-1 in the Marine Corps is", and you will have to say. Such as, "E-1 in the Marine core is, Private, he wears no rank insignia, SIR". Then E-2 all the way to E-9. It can get a little tricky when it gets up to E-8 and E-9 at first. Because there are multiple ranks at that number. Any time you are waiting, marching, or anything, they will be beating them into your head. Over and over and over... etc. Annoying, but it works. Especially on humps. Humping for hours saying the same things over and over, didnt much care for that.

Do not go to medical, unless you have to. Do not go because you're a little sore, or have a headache. It better be for a good reason, or you'll likely pay for it. Be loud, be fast, do not say "I" or "me" and things will be easier.

Just got back from seven months away last Thursday myself. Combat Engineer, get to blow stuff up, see sig. ;) 32 years old, got a 282 PFT. By far the oldest, and the second highest score in my platoon.

TallBill, this pos forum software made me lose an entire post. I will be back to follow up
later. Seeing as how I can't post anything longer than a paragraph, the response will be in pieces. Sorry.

Basically, you only think it's drivel because you lack the ability to understand there are people out there who have differing opinions from you. Deal with it.

lol, off topic but I HATE it when that happens to a well thought out post. Doesn't happen to me much on here, but on another site about 30% of the time.

But in response to you, I'm sure that every single soldier, marine, etc has had someone tell them "keep your head down", or "be safe", or "dont get hurt" or whatever. Yet complete randomness still chooses its victims.

I'm just saying that its pointless advice, just like telling someone to "drive safe". Its entirely well meant, but gets repetitive.

TallBill, as a Vietnam Marine, I think he's ****** crazy for enlisting in these times, just like people thought I was crazy for enlisting when I did...it is NOT sane to enlist in a branch of the Armed Services that will almost guarantee you a post in a combat zone, especially one as volatile as Iraq.
As for serving his country, I'm developing the attitude that fighting in Bush's war is NOT serving our country, but rather, serving the interests of those PNAC folks who engineered this cluster-fvck.

None the less, to Dain for this.
It's a difficult decision to enlist during times of war, and can be a HUGE career step later in life...
As I said earlier in this thread Dain, enjoy boot camp. (yeah, it's gonna be tough and brutal) but it's also one of the best things you'll ever do to/for yourself as far as personal growth.
You'll learn more about yourself in the 12 weeks (I think it's still 12 weeks) of boot camp, than you'd probably learn in a lifetime without it.
There's something to be said for hanging in the middle of the pack I guess, but there's also a lot to be said for doing your absolute best, and trying to be the best ****** recruit in your platoon...EMBRACE your time on the quarterdeck...it will make you stronger...
U-RAH!

Just remember- you run faster with your knife out, always remember to keep your aimbot turned on, and don't forget to buy body armor at the beginning of each round.

Just kidding.

Good luck and thank you for your service.

Each year, an estimated 438,000 people in the United States die prematurely from smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke, and another 8.6 million have a serious illness caused by smoking.

A whopping what.. 1,000 or so American's died in the military in 2006?

Put down the doughnuts and join up, you could drop a couple of your chins that way.
