Folding@Home overheating question-help

I recently had to scrub my main home pc and reinstall everything. It's an ECS K7S5A motherboard, 1.4 Athlon (don't laugh) and 256 MB memory (the only change-was 512 MB-RAM went bad & will be replaced in a few days).

I'm running Folding@Home in the graphic mode. With F@H running my CPU temperature is 52 degrees Celsius. Without F@H it drops to 46, which is more normal for this computer.

Am I doing something wrong? Before the computer was always about 45-47 degrees. I may have been running the screensaver version then-is that significantly different?

temps seem about right, the 1.4 Athlon is a fairly hot running chip. a 5-7 degree rise in temp would not be unusual when a cpu goes to 100% usage.
What are you using for a HSF, you may want to add a bit stronger fan if you can deal with a little more noise. If you are using stock retail HSF you may drop the temps a few degrees by removing the HSF and scraping off the old thermal pad and replace it with a good thermal compound like Actic Silver.

as a side note the console version of the client will be more efficiant than the graphical client.

Heatsink is a Thermalright SLK-800 with a generic regular size (80mm?) fan on it, Artic Silver thermal paste. Low sound is important to me, I don't want to add a screamer fan. Multiple low volume case fans (case temp is 28 degrees with or without F@H).

No change to videocard (or cpu heatsink/fan) in this rebuild.

The only possible change I can think of is I may have been running in the screensaver module before. Is that substantially less efficient? I had another Athlon 1.4 system (stock cooling) that ran 55 degrees and eventually failed, don't want that happening here.

Thermalright SLK-800 should be a good enough HSF, don't think that's the problem. perhaps you could try to remove, clean the HSF and cpu and re-apply some thermal compound.
Have you ever tried to lower the voltage ? I know the K7S5A dosen't have V core setting in the bios , but you could try the pin mod...? ?

52 degrees is well within spec, but of course we all like to keep temps as low as we can.

You can also try adding a couple of case fans. Like osage said if you haven't reapplied you thermal compound in a while it's a good idea to do so.

The screen saver mode would make the graphics card add a little heat to the combination. Like osage said the console is most efficiant.

I don't know if running F@H at less than 100% would help, maybe try 95% or 90%.

If you are using the CLI client now, you can lessen the amount of cpu usage the client uses, there by reducing temps while keeping a nice quiet computer. Re-start the client with the -config flag, and when it asks to change advanced options type yes. One of the options is 'CPU usage requested'. Type 80 (80%) and see if the heat issues persist. If so, then request 70% etc... til you find an acceptable level.
I'm not sure how to change cpu usage with the GUI client.
Doesnt matter if it takes longer to finish a work unit, you are still contributing to a great TeAm and great project. 😀 good luck!

I'm thinking that in the screen saver mode, you never could see your temps when the client was actually running since it only ran when the screen saver was on. Had you been able to see temps when the ss was active, I'm guessing you would have seen the temp rise due to your processor rumblin' along at 100%

Don't forget it is getting hotter outside so the ambient room temps will increase thus increasing the case temps.
