Folding@Home - AMD or Intel?

I am going down to Fry's today to setup a dedicated folding machine.
My question is what folds faster @ default speeds a XP2800 or a P4 2400?
Does memory performance or amount mean anything to F@H?

If the P4 has HT then it'll be faster because you can run 2 instances.

Yeah, ever since HT came along, P4 seems to lead for distributed computing by a good margin.

But then you'll heat your computer up.
Many have argued over how much heat folding causes.
My computer idle ~ 50c
P4 3.4c, folding at 50%, cpu temp ~ 60c
If I have folding at 100%, cpu temp ~ 65c
That's a little bit high, so I leave it at 50%.

I can play T2, D3, and UT2K4 and there is no lag, so yes, I'd say the P4 with HT is better if you plan on multitasking the machine.

If your temperature is going so high under full cpu load, you need to do something about airflow, or you have a thermal paste or heatsink problem. I have no idea if 65 is bad for P4s or not, but you're right that it 'sounds high'.

I'm willing to be the temp is just as high for any other 100% task that you might run.

My 3.2C is faster than my XP 2500+ @ 3200+ in F@H, and it ran ~55C running two instances. You should be more concerned with the machine's main purpose rather than Folding.

"a dedicated folding machine"

Machine's main purpose, no ?

Didn't see that one, I was in a rush to post and get out the door. If the price is equal, and the P4 has HyperThreading, I'd say Intel, otherwise AMD.
