Just out of curiousity, how many AT members run the PS3 client? I wish they had one for the Wii, XBox360, or for nVidia cards, but no such luck.

I'm a man of old components, and I feel like a dinosaur with my 2600+ mobile Barton folding away. I've been having these crazy ideas of going for a complete build again, and was hoping for a comparison in PPD between a new Q6600 or so and my current CPU. Of course simply a CPU is CLEARLY not enough of an upgrade, so a nice GPU chugging along sounds rather nice as well.

Sadly I've lost my PPD calculators at some point, but if anyone had average numbers for the Bartons, Quad cores and I assume a new ati gpu (nvidia still doesn't have support, right?) that'd be real neat. I'll probably find out my own ppd myself shortly, but I had to ask ;)

I see you on my rear view mirror jdiddy:(
I need more power

There is no way I'm catching you. I'm running at full bore now that the weather permits, and its still not enough. I would need 3 PS3's and a 2 quad cores to catch you!

not an entirely accurate calc but a here is a referance for you
http://www.maximumpc.com/forum...267cb92f3b346dae924897
barton 2600+ desktop avg ~190ppd.

with the SMP client on a q6600 you will get around 2200-2400ppd stock and upto 3000ppd when overclocked (into the 3.5-3.6ghz range) on windows. If you run VMware with 2 instances of linux that can jump to 3500 ppd (overclocked).

The GPU client clompetes a workunit in about 14hours give or take depending on other factors (at 330points). So thats about 500-550ish ppd. All ATI x19xx series produce about the same ppd, there are slight variences but not enough to worry about.

Running the GPU client and the SMP client will slow down the production of the SMP client, but will boost overall ppd by around 250-300.

This is my understanding from the research I have done. other people may have more accurate figures, markf is the guy to speak to about quads as he runs a few! (lucky, lucky man) The only numbers i am certain about are the GPU client as i have run it in the past.

hope this helps

David

Mmh, that's a pretty enormous upgrade in PPD for a single system, much more than I had expected. A 15x upgrade for the same price just 4 years later.. good god. Thanks, definitely going quad.

As an idea of the PPD difference with the SMP client, i'll tell you stats of my pc.
Running 2 x normal console clients I get 22mins per frame on p3405 thats worth 206 points on each core. This means 145ppd per core (with bonus point wus that can double) so thats around ~290ppd with normal WU's or ~580ppd with bonus wu's.
Now if i run a GPU console inplace of 1 of the normal consoles that will raise to 500ppd (gpu) + 145-290 (depending upon wu) from 1 core = 645-790ppd.
with the SMP client running using both cores I get 25mins per frame on p2653 (1760points) = ~1005ppd. which isn't really effected by the work unit type to much.
So on a basic dual core pc you can go from 300ppd to 1000ppd just by changing clients!
The only thing to remember is that the SMP WU deadlines are significatnly shorter, 3 to 4 days is the maximum time you have to do them.
As my pc isn't on all day I have trouble meeting the SMP deadlines, so I have reverted back to 1x GPU + 1x normal console.
