my 4th quad is up and running. When I get it stable, my points will go up another 3k/day or more, its at 3.5 right now. 3.6 was stable, but kept getting EEU's.

All DIY. Note the DQ6 latest addition ? should get my average to 13k/day once stable (still working on that, keeps getting EEU's right now) And Dells are almost impossible to OC.

Hi,

I'm thinking about building a machine myself. can you PM me how much all you're parts are and where you got them from?

thanks,
Seung

While you're waiting for the Wunderkind to post back, the starting point for any DIY is to have a budget. You can spend anywhere from a couple hundred bucks to many thousand, depending on what you want, tempered by that budget. I just upgraded an existing box with an Asus P5N-E Sli motherboard and an E6750 processor that I've got clocked at 3.2ghz, and that upgrade was only $350. It cranks out an SMP unit in about 23 hours. I also just built up an Asus Blitz Formula, with a Q6600 quad which I haven't started overclocking, yet, and a Radeon X1950Pro video card, so I can run GPU folding, and that puppy set me back more than $1500. It does the same SMP unit in less than 20 hours, plus the bonus of whatever the gpu is cranking out simultaneously.

My favorite "fantasy" links (so you can get started on that budget):

Have fun!

thanks. i got to thinking... what do you think about the ps3 for folding? I read up on the ppd and what not but i'm still not sure if it makes sense to get one or build a machine. what do you think will be best? let's say i have about $1000 to spend.

thanks,
Seung

I?m not a gamer, so PS3 doesn?t hold any interest for me. I?d rather play with the parts. Here?s a possible build scenario for your budget, just to get you started:

Gigabyte GA P-35 DS4 $187 http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813128064 or
Asus P5K-E /WiFi $156
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813131196

Intel Q6600 Quad Core (GO stepping) $276
http://www.clubit.com/product_...l.cfm?itemno=CA1938452

Zalman CNPS9500 CPU Cooler $48
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16835118003

2gb Kingston HyperX DDR2-800 $130
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820134125

Corsair 620HX 620watt PSU $127
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/...jsp?ProductCode=373110

Western Digital Raptor, 74gb $145
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/...p?ProductCode=101222-1

Western Digital 500gb H/D $107
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/...jsp?ProductCode=101259

Plextor DVD-RW $30
http://www.clubit.com/product_...il.cfm?itemno=A1566753

Lite-On DVD ROM $18
http://www.clubit.com/product_...il.cfm?itemno=A1546928

This is pretty close -- $1068, not including the case, or taxes and shipping. I tried to spead the business around to all the vendors I listed in my ^^post. Some of these prices reflect mail-in rebates, as well. The case is a pretty personal choice, governed by how much you want to spend and the desired bells and whistles. Since you want control over your power supply selection, you?ll want to pick a case that does not include one, so you?re not doubling-up on that item. If you want some further input, let me know. I've probably omitted something really important, too (like the OS), so please don't hesitate. MM

edit: Oh, yeah. The video card. Duh. HIS HD2600Pro, $110. http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814161099

You can get back towards the $1,000 mark by eliminating the Raptor Drive, and just running from the single 500gb, until you've got more $$$ to expand your storage, if that's an issue. The system will just run faster from the Raptor.

Well, I will stick by recomending my recent built. Previous quad builds (I have 4 of them) didn't turn out so great, 3.2 is the highest, and that one burned out a motherboard, so here goes:

Q6600 CPU: CLUBIT is the only one in stock that guarantees G0 stepping

Gigabyte DQ5 P35 motherboard, this think rocks ! Only mobo (including my ASUS P5K) that has NO vdroop

Ultra 120 extreme LAPPED hsf.

OCZ LL PC 6400 memory 2x 1 gig sticks.

PSU .. Well, here I am open, but my current favorite are the fortron ones. 500 watt at least, the blue ones are cool.

This build is not cheap, but if you go quad, spend the money, I am sorry I didn;t on the others. A dual-core is way easier to build, for for F@H, you can;t beat a quad ! 3k ppd @ 3.2 or better. Notice, I have the hihest aver PPD, and thats just 3 quads and a dual. The fourth is still getting stable. I think it may be @3.510, as I just got my first unit finished. 8 minutes per step !
