Hey guys, I just joined up today. How long does a 500 frame work unit take on an Athlon 64 4000+ if you let it run 100% without interruption?

Because right now it estimates I won't complete the WU until 12 days from now?
Or is this normal?

Ahh, now it says two days. I guess it overestimates when it starts.

Hello and welcome to wizboy11, Avalon and renozi!

You will get the welcome at the top of the thread after you finish a WU and it gets updated on the stats sites (usually a few hours after finishing).

"How often does F@H "phone home"?"
This will vary on the computer and mostly on the WU. Different projects take different lengths of time to finish. If it takes longer to finish, the WU is probably worth more points.

Give the client several hours to come up with a more accurate estimate of time to finish. I think it calculates how long the last percent done took to finish so if you were doing a compute intensive task (which will slow down F@H which is OK as they only want your idle cycles) the estimate will be skewed.
I think the longest WUs should not take much more than 2-3 days on newer computers and most should be less.

"when does the site open for me to sign up at a member?"
There is no sign up for F@H. Just put 198 for the TeAm and finish a WU and you will be listed on the stats.

I got another question.
I have two F@H things running since I have a dual core CPU.

One is FaHCore_82 and thats only using ~5mb of ram.
However, the other is running FaHCore_7a and thats using ~37mb of ram.

How come one is using so much more memory, and how much memory might F@H use? (hope it's not too much).

I followed the guide and used the commad line ones. All you need to do is set the Machine ID to 1 and 2 for the different cores you might have.

I'm a n00b at F@H but I think thats how you do it.

that is because you are running two diff types of work units. each core opperates totally independant of each other so can get assigned diff types of work units. that's good that the one is using 37 meg though... that "usually" means you'll get a higher points per day even though it will take longer to complete

hmm, with this new streaming stuff for ATI X1900's, plus my fan controller getting here today, so I can tolerate 24/7 CPU on time, I think I am actually going to install folding at home tonight when I get home from work. I figure if my X1900XTX is 500x better than my Opty 170 at folding, I minus well join in to help, since not everyone can at this point.

Anything I need to know to get started tonight or tomorrow, or can I just install this and let it chug away.

Receive work and send work. That's pretty much it.

I'm interested in getting three instances up. I ought to write a short guide on how to modify your BIOS to make the video card fan run 100% all the time (this works wonderfully for me and is dead silent because I have an Accelero X2).

Alternatively, since these are X1900 cards, Ati Tray Tools allows you to set fan speeds to a static speed, or pre-define your own fan speeds for each thermal threshold. I have mine set via the latter, which gives you some very nice tuning.

For installing the cpu version of F@H, use the guide made here.

As far as requirements for F@H on your GPU, no one knows exactly what will need to be done. But a driver update will most likey need to be performed.

Let us know if you have any other questions :)
