Hey Guys

I am trying to use the -configonly switch for the 5.04 console and having problems trying to change the User name
I am using XP.
The way I think it should work is after I stop the process, I go into the folder containing the program for each instance and then restart the console with the switch

I have tried with the "run" I select in the start list. And I tried to add the switch to FAH504-Console.exe program within the properties but all it does is restart the process and continues on with the WU already started

I would appreciate some detailed help.

Thanks in advance

@Scott66

The easiest way is to create a desktop shortcut and add the -configonly switch (along with any other switches you are presently using) to the target line.

However, I do it a little differently: make sure to stop the client before running the .bat file!

The way I do it is to create a little batch file (text file with the .bat extention like this:

(my file is names configuration.bat)

cd c:\Scott\Folding at Home CPU 1
fah504-console.exe -local -configonly

When you run this batch file (be sure to change the path to where you have your fah installed) it will give you all the configuration choices then exit the process when done.
now re-start the folding the way you usually do and you should be good to go.

-Sid

PS: I think it's great that you made the effort to liven this place up a little (gravity pool)

I suspect a rouge WU or two might just end up with your name on them in the next few days. ;)

Thanks Insidious
Got it working and kept the shortcut in each folder so it will be easy when I make the change back
I was looking at your batch file and that brought back memories of my DOS days.

Just have one question what is the reason for the -local switch?

re: -local

I have dual processor PCs so I have two installations (each in it's own directory) of FaH on the machine. The -local switch is necessary so FaH puts the files associated with each client in the right directory. (without the switch, FaH thinks it can't run the second instance because it sees one is already running)

If the GUI version has never been installed on the computer you do not need the -local flag.

If you run the console on a computer that has had the GUI installed (and/or is running the GUI) then you need the -local switch, otherwise the console will use the GUI's registry data and things can get messed up.

I'm thinking/hoping that V6 will eliminate all this stuff

Also, thanks to Scott66 for the Gravity Pool idea

I didn't use the -local the first time and was wondering why it worked. I am using consoles for both cores. So I tried -local on one and I lost some work due to a conflict but that is OK as it was replaced with a faster work unit but similiar in points.

So I learned something new and the damage done was actually a benefit.

We have always just said to use the -local flag because it does not hurt anything if it is not needed, but can cause problems if it is not used when it IS needed!

I always use it and also I always use the -forceasm flag after I know the computer is F@H stable.
