A couple of the students in my freshman or sophomore class had Hewlett Packards that cost several hundred dollars. My first one was a Texas Instrument SR10. I don't remember exactly how much it cost but I think it was about $150.

I was really disappointed in that thread🙁 I've spent my entire career in research (27 years) and I can only say I was directly involved in developing one drug. It is very frustrating but I can tell you there are literally 10's of thousands of scientists in academic and company labs that are passionate about developing new drugs to treat diseases.

I think most people take for granted all the vaccines (diptheria and many others) and life saving antibiotics that have been developed this century. I myself suffer from high blood pressure and there are many drugs that work effectively to treat that as well.

Cancer is an especially difficult area of research. Every type of cancer has a different cause so one "cure" is not in the equation. There are a lot of small companies out there that are targeting specific types of cancer. These companies absolutely depend on academic labs "pointing the way" towards potential therapies/drugs.

The F@H lab at Stanford and Rosetta at U Washington are doing very valuable work. I'm a protein biochemist and all current drugs and all future drugs will target specific proteins. If we have an understanding of how certain proteins fold and what they're "normal/abnormal" structures are then it gives scientists a clue/strategy of how to develop new drugs.

I guess it' time to get off my soap box but some of the people over at the cpu forum really pissed me off. :evil: Many of them completely wrote off DC support of all research projects! Just think of the hardship Galileo went through in his lifetime!

I have this Neanderthal skit that comes to mind:

"Blog..what are you doing with those rocks?" "It's kinda weird Flog...if I bang these rocks together, I can make these little sparks of light" Wow...that's pretty cool Blog...I wonder what that is?" I'm not sure Flog...but it's kind of like the light we see in storms"

Flog and Blog's friend Slug comes over and says "What are you two doing?" Flog says "If I bang these two rocks together I see flashes of light!" Slug says "You two are always wasting time doing stupid and useless things!" "Why don't you do something useful and gather some more berries for dinner!

Alas, the discovery of "fire" is delayed another generation!
