Insidious's guide to set up two SMP clients on quad

I started contributing to F@H again. 😀
But what's the deal with the SMP client? I run F@H on a quad and a dual core, so I just set up four / two separate folders and run F@H "like in the old days". What's the difference between SMP and the regular client? Different WUs? PPD? Because it doesn't seem to be ease of use, according to the info Insidious' guide. 🙂

Welcome back BMC!

The SMP gets much better PPD, which is why we put up with it.

The SMP will use up to four cores, so only run one. Unless you use Affinity Changer on a quad, then running two will get better PPD (I think still?)

The best PPD/watt client is I think the GPU client.

Welcome to the TeAm MBrown551

and welcome (back?) to BlackMountainCow too.

congrats to the milestone makers! some nice juicy ones in there today 😀

Thanks for the stats GLeeM

+1, And thanks GLeeM! 🙂

Welcome to the TeAm MBrown551 😀
Congratulations to the MM's. 😎

BMC........
While I have not documented it personally, the common thought around is that the best point production for SMP client is to run two on a quad (different directories of course) and also run SMP affinity changer.
If you just want ease of use you can simply run one SMP.

For the dual core just run one SMP.

Sid's guide was a big help to me.

I think I'm repeating what GLeeM said..............just different. 😉

Thanks GLeeM .

I don't know how you guys do it, but after messing with that SMP client for an hour I gave up on it. The guides didn't really help as it looks like the new DEINO client isn't yet mentioned on those guides. I always got error 63(99) and I didn't understand the structure of DeIno. Is that some sort of wrapper? Anyway, I'm back to 4 regular CLI clients. 🙂

DEINO is an MPI wrapper. I pulled my hair out after trying to get it working with my Socket 939 Athlon X2, I just used MPICH. Much, MUCH better; been crunching for days.

That's our good ol' BMC...

All the guides written for MPICH and he goes for the Dieno 😛

(j/k)

Sorry it didn't go well. I still run the SMP alongside the GPUs, but I wouldn't miss it if they decided to can it.

-Sid

Hey BMC... be sure to know I'm just kidding

but seriously, they have written some pretty decent installation guides at the f@h forum. You can see it here

Their guides are probably better than the one I tried to do (before these existed)
You will also find guides for the denio version of the SMP and also the GPU (video card) here if you click the 'guides' link at the top of the page I linked you too.

Good Luck

-Sid

Good Luck BMC.

I finally got Deino to work just fine after I calmed down and and made myself follow the instructions EXACTLY.
I did something funky when I first tried and almost gave up too.

The MPICH IS easier to get going though, and in one instance I have used it too. I guess it's one of those cases where when all else fails follow the instructions............. I always have to learn the hard way. 😛
