Ditto!!:beer::beer:

Thanks GLeeM!😎

I shut down my linux box for a little maintenance yesterday and when I restarted, I found that the linux Fah smp beta client had expired so I downloaded the beta2 client.

There's a thread here describing the changes to the beta clients including the new Windows SMP client.

There is one major change to the Windows SMP client but they claim the problem with mpiexec and the MPI libraries are beyond their "scope" but they may switch the MPI libraries at some point.

Somebody help me remember that these newest clients expire on August 2.

I don't know why they insist on calling these things Beta clients. They aren't making any developments to the clients and won't address any of the client shortcomings when they are identifed by "beta testers", but have these stupid expirations anyway.

Their 'major change' for the Windows SMP clilent is to tell it to echo the mpi checks to the screen (the checks were always done, just not displayed).

Now, back to our regularly scheduled folding!

Ya, I'm really starting to regret my renewed interest in this project. Perhaps it's only a small interuption in production but sheesh, I have a real life too!!!

Fold,

Gravity

Thanks for the welcome! The links you guys provided helped me a lot in setting up. I've got my C2D chip working 2 instances and my PS3 crunching too. Unfortunately my PS3 has done 4 WUs, but due to the problems with the PS3 right now, I've gotten credit on 1 of them only 🙁

Welcome SecretAsianMan & KrnMasterSgt, congrats to the climbers and fellow MM's. Thanks, as always, Mr. Statman!

Come on, buddy, hang in there -- you were my original inspiration to get involved with this project at the level I have.

Besides, you'd take away the fun of catching you in August . . . 2010!!!

We need you gravity. Once I get my farm up, it'll be only 3 years to catch up. We need to overtake 22. Be there when we do it!

Thanks for the welcome ^^ Anyone else having problem with F@H? Before I finished another WU yesterday I noticed it stopped at about 90% with a download error, I tried various things to fix it and now F@H just sits there with repeated download core errors :/

But I almost forgot.

Thanks Gleem!
Congrats to MMs!

And welcome SecretAsianMan!

And glad to see you made it to F@H KrnMasterSgt

what's the trick to getting 2 instances to run?

It's annoying that the 1 instance doesn't use 100% of both cores...not even close

That usually happens when you are OC'ed too much. F@H is much harder to be stable than Orthos or the like.... I don;t even bother with those anymore. Are you OC'ed ? at what speec ? and temps and settings ?

I chose the recommended which was windows graphical 5.03

And from what I've seen, it seems the PS3 is running F@H a bit faster than my rig. Not totally sure about this but it has completed more WU's (although I have been running F@H on my ps3 for longer)

The best client for PPD is the single SMP console client (for a dual-core)

I think you can only run one of the graphical client. But you can add another client if it is the no nonsense text only client ("CLI" for short (command line interface) to take advantage of both those cores. There are a couple tricks to it. Just ask and we'll help you if you decide you want to give it a try.

And as MarkFW said, if you want max points (also uses both your cores), the SMP (beta) client gives you that. (You'd have to uninstall the graphical client to run it though.)

-Sid

Edit: got SMP setup, thanks

Alright so here's my setup for now (if my electric bill is crazy high, I'm gonna have to take some of these down):

1. PS3
2. C2D E8400 @ 3.6GHz - Home machine - In signature
3. P4 @ 3.0GHz - Work desktop
4. P4 @ 2.8GHz - Another work computer I hijacked
5. C2D @ 1.6GHz - Laptop (not going to be on all the time, but hey why not)

I can hook up my old rig for this as well, but I'm starting to get apprehensive about my home electric bill. Maybe I will haul it into work and use it as a raid-1 fileserver/folding machine.

Old rig is another P4 @ 3.0GHz (stock clock Northwood cpu)... although I have a nice Abit IC7-G mobo and this could be overclocked pretty well if someone wants to donate a badass unused socket 478 heatsink.

Later, I'm going to try to convince a co-worker to run it in the background as well, that's another P4 3.0GHz. --- Edit: done. User: Anusorn on team 198!

There's also a couple Intel Celeron machines sitting around here. Do you think it's even worth it?? They can barely run winXP!! I tried to set it up and the system kept hanging doing mundane tasks in XP, so I gave up. There's 2 of these machines and they're definitely not the most powerful....... But if you guys think it's worth it, I can just install ubuntu or something and get F@H working on that.

Now I have another question... how do you find out who and when you will overtake?

And why is the PS3 so much better at this than a home desktop? I had no idea the cell processor was this powerful

Your stats at EOC.

The PS3 cell processors excel at some types of F@H calculations, your home desktop does good on all types of calculations.

Well I'm OCed to 3.6 now but I've been getting the errors even at the stock 2.4, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, although I was able to get it to run after jumping to 3.6 except I had the bad luck of having the power to my house black out for about 2 hours, after rebooting I couldn't get it to run :/

Edit: Well I want to get my max PPD once I'm done with the work I need to do on my system, what set-up is optimal for a quad core?
