Thanks Neurodog.

Don't have a PS3. I am running one instance on my slightly overclocked Q6600, which is pretty much on 24x7.

Not really sure if this thread is the right place to ask but anyway...

I would like to run two instances of F@H on my quad core system. I have configured two separate instances in two separate directories and they appear as two separate services and I can start them individually which is all good.

What I want to know is: Is there a way to keep the F@H process tied to one core? In other words change the affinity permanently? Will that improve performance? Or should I not bother and just let Windows scheduler distribute the load across the cores?

Go to the task manager and click on the processes tab and then click on the "image name" column header to sort in alphabetical order. At this point you'll need to know which fah core you are running (gromacs, etc) as there are several of them. They will be downloaded in your fah directories. Anyway, right click on the core process and choose "set affinity" and a dialog box will pop up and tell you which cpu the process is running on. click cancel and find the other core from the other fah directory and check that one too. If they are both running on the same cpu, then that will cut your performance in half. If not, then you are ok!

If you are after maximum points and you're computer is on 24/7, I would suggest running the windows SMP client which uses all for cores on your quad. It will stress your system though;)

cheers!

A quick note for sharad:

I have a quad core set up that it's main purpose is gaming and video encoding. It runs the SMP cliet 24/7 crunching away at WUs and I have never shut down the client while gaming, video encoding, DVD burning, etc. It does an outstanding job at making sure there are enough cpu cycles available to do whatever it is you are doing. I've done some half-assed testing to see if whatever I'm doing suffers with the client running while doing everything else and have yet to find any negative impact. This is with running 32-bit XP Pro OS.

So I agree with biodoc: get rid of all versions of F@H you have installed and go with the SMP client- you'll see some significant impact with your research stats. When I started back up with F@H, I originally had set up what you have on your system right now and by going the SMP route I almost doubled the amount of research. If you are concerned with cpu cycles, during setup you can tell it what percentage of cpu usage you want it to use but IMHO there is no real reason you can't run it at 100%.

If you do install the SMP client don't forget to add the -smp flag to your fah.exe in whichever directory you have it installed. Something I originally neglected to do and started up with crunching some really wimpy WUs.

Welcome aboard- with the setup you have I expect to see you in my rearview mirror soon!

Glad your with us Mark ;)

Good to see you post here:)
Re SMP clients & affinity ,in addition to the above Insidious was telling me that using an affinity changing program along with the 2xSMP clients further boosted his scores ,inital figures show that he cut processing time by about 28%!:Q (see F@H race thread ,can't remember which:eek:).I'm going to be trying it out myself once this WU has finished.

What's your Q6600 o/ced to btw? mine's at 3GHz atm.

@AS1, you don't have to wait until you present WU has finished to add a second one. This will work:

  • reboot windows to have your client stopped
  • do the setup again and point to a second directory of your choosing for the files
  • Go there and run the install.bat
  • reboot again and create your shortcut to the second one like you did for the other with the switches you use
  • Remember to use the the -local switch on both of your clients so they will not get confused where their repseective files are
  • be sure to set the machine id to a number that is different from your first client when you configure it on it's first run
  • reboot again (just to be sure.. I've borked a couple WUs when I didn't
  • start both clients normally

Also you can install the affinity changer in the middle of work.... nothing seems to care
