I just got started a few hours ago. Joined team 198! A question though...is it possible to fold on 2 computers at once? and can I use both CPU and GPU power for folding?

Thanks,
-Shmee

Yes, you can fold on as many computers as you like, so long as your user name and team number are the same. As far as I know you can run both the GPU and CPU clients on the same rig, though I have not had much luck doing so. Some of the other members could probably point you in the right direction better than I in that regard.

Oh, and Welcome to the TeAm!

Ty, got them both working on both computers. I was wondering, what does the unit "ns" mean? I figure it cant be nanoseconds, but it must be some measure of either computer operations done or protein parts finished. Also, it seems by that amount, my GTX 260 is about 3x the speed of my 8800 GT lol.

Thanks phaxmohdem for the stats and congrats on your milestone! Well done! 🙂

Shmee, welcome!

Welcome to the TeAm, Shmee 🙂

Where are you seeing the unit "ns"? And it probably is nanoseconds.

It may be, but I didn't think a 260 would be three times faster than 8800. It may be that each has a different (Project) type WU (work unit).

You might want to check out FahMon, handy little app that shows WU, WU points, about when WU will finish, PPD for each client, total PPD.

Here are some examples of the speeds of the GTX 260's. Note that (1) is a 192 core, (4) 45nm and (2) are 55nm. I also have (1) 8800 running at the moment just to give you an idea of the speeds. As Gleem has mentioned, not quite 3x but much faster indeed!

Edit: BTW the Q9450 has (2) 45nm Gpu's. One looks a bit slower but thats because I was using the pc at that time. 🙂

when I say display on the client I downloaded from the site, the one with the nvidia logo, under current work unit, it measures performance in ns / day. And I have notice that the performance of a card in ns / day does vary from protein to protein.

Also, i noticed that the 8800 GT gets about 30 C hotter than the GTX 260 does. Both have fan on 100%. The 260 is oced signifigantly, the 8800 GT not so much. only 30/75/50. (100 DDR)

For a while the program restarted, I checked the log file, and it said that the 8800 GT was unstable when I had it higher, so I brought it back down some.

Whats weird is that the Q6600 @ 3.4 seems to be going faster than my i7 @ 4.2. They are both out of 500, but mb the Q6600 got a smaller protein?

What are your 260 clocks?
Are they OCed?
If so how much?

EDIT: @Shmee: There are some WUs that run MUCH hotter, one example is the 511 point WUs.
As for the Q6600 seeming faster - get FahMon - it will tell all.

All my 260's are set at 576 core/ 1512 shader/ 999 memory. I underclocked the core and memory and bumped up the shader since the WU's require the shader speed as opposed to the core speed. Each card, for the most part are simular but some have higher clocks than others. A couple of my cards are superclocked but I have found the sweet spot so to speek for each of my setups to be set to these speeds. I can go higher on some but they have been crunching at these speeds for a while now.

Edit: Also to mention, depending on the WU, the temps are very good. If you look at the bottom of the image and look at the temp you will see that the Gpu's have been running @ 57ish and a bit higher on other Wu's like the the dreded 511 pointers.

my 260 is currently running at 690/1487/1125. It is the evga vanilla 216 card.

EDIT: I bumped it up to 702/1512/1150. Also, I installed FahMon. My total PPD (what does that stand for?) is about 12000 between the 2 computers. Is that good?

I noticed that both the 8800 and the 260 have many times the PPD of either OC'd CPU. The 260 makes about 7092, the 8800 about 4121.

Shmee,

PPD= Points Per Day.

And just so you are aware, The Wu's use the shader clock way more than the core clock. So to save on heat a bit, you could lower the core clock and up the shaders a bit more on those cards. All my cards except 1 are EVGA so, I know the can handle the shaders @ 1512 easy!

And thats about in the ballpark of each card at those settings you mentioned.

I think I might need some serious advice here 😱

I started OCing my EVGA 275 by raising the shaders 25 each time. I thought it would eventually start to give EUEs or something. No EUEs yet and I am at ... 1675!! Temps are ~70C.

Will that high OC kill or hurt the card if run 24/7?

It sure is giving nice PPD on the 787 pointers - ~9500

I quit raising it recently after not seeing very many with that high shaders.

It shouldn't hurt the card as long as you have good circulation and cooling in your case. So with that being said, keeping the cards to bit of an OC is fine as long as you don't max them out. If you do, then thats when you would most likely see the EUE's poping up.

Well, I also use my GTX 260 for playing games, but I will try upping shader more if I can. And 70 C is no problem usually, as long as card is stable. They are rated for about 105C. Is fan already at 100%?

Also, my GTX 260 maxes around 60 C, but I havent pushed it too its limits there yet, and I have fan on 100%.
