Folding @ home 24/7 on PS3? At 15c per kwhr, that $250+yr.

a ps3 draws 190w from the wall socket while folding? I guess that makes sense when you consider that a 280 gtx is supposed to draw more than that all by itself...
 
I'd pay $20 a month for a good cruncher and the ability to play games every once in a while. But that isn't counting the initial cost of the PS3. Now if a Final Fantasy VII remake comes out for a PS3, I'll definitely get one.
 
I imagine desktop PCs aren't any cheaper. Worth it? I think so. The amount of work that PS3 does is huge, now that PS3s are doing F@H the amount of work the project is doing has tripled allowing for much more complex and large work units. The science at Stanford is progressing much faster than it has in all the years the project has been online, and the PS3 is the reason.

how much would running my PC 24/7 cost when my UPS tells me its drawing 300watts constantly?
i live in NYC, but i'm nto sure of the electricity rate here

~$30.90 / month or so. I did a quick search and found the average rate in NY is 14.314 cents per kWh. (# watts / 1000 (kw) x 24 (hours) x 30 (days) x rate [cents per kWh]). The rate your utility company charges should be on your electric bill, if you need to know specifically. Also, this doesn't take into account the accurace (or inaccuracy I guess) of the UPS.
 
Yes, I think it is worth it. Then again, I have 4 dedicated boxes at home with a small farm located at my brothers house (he has at least 5 boxes folding for me).
The more the better. Plus it's only money...

I think it over at folding forum I read something about the 40 GB version using lots less electricity.

Yes, it's worth it. Supporting research with cpu cycles is a no brainer for me.

If the only difference is the HDD size, say 40GB vs 80GB then no it'll hardly make any difference to power useage.

😕I don't have any Idea how much I am paying for da juice😕...My monthly maintenance charge INCLUDES gas & electric at my co-op developement. Since I and my better half have lived hear since 1986 there has been only ONE small increase due specifically to energy costs in the NorthEast of the good ole US of A.

Of course, the maintenance charges have gone up from time to time, which may reflect increases in energy cost to the cooperative as a whole - but considering how much rental units go for in NYC these days (which DON"T include Gas & Electricity) for a 4 and 1/2 room apartment we have quite the bargain!

So it does not matter whether I have 1 pc & 1 PS3 or as many as 40 crunchers running 24/7 (and making the apartment feel like a sauna!) - :roll: well, I wish I could have as many crunchers as I like & afford, though I don't think there is that much juice running thru the outlets to power that many!

Well, My wife would kill me if I built a home-grown server farm right in the living room! Just have to be happy with the 4 PC boxes and a PS3 crunching away at F@H.
