folder viewing problems

hey guys -- whenever i open a folder with individual files in it my computer hangs for 10-30 seconds. this happens also in a program when trying to open a file through the file->open dialog box. just wondering if anybody ever had this problem and what you did about it.

FYI, i just built a workstation with a sapphire crossfire advantage mobo, radeon x1900xtx, and AMD athlon 4800+ toldeo processor.

any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
 
oh i'm also using a WD Raptor 10k HD. i reformatted it and used windows to format it instead of the WD formatting utility. could this be part of the problem?

Ran chkdsk/f to make sure you do not have crossed files. You might also want to check your IDE controller to make sure they are set to Ultra DMA mode.
