Folder Sharing Win 8 to Xbox

Just spent over an hour trying to figure out why the shared folders on the Win 8 machine could not be seen by the xbox. It could access the ones on the 7 machine fine. It appears that in 7 the folders must be added as a location under the appropriate library category, is this correct?
