damn, rough.

question: what are the Red Ex's on the cars' windows and doors and bits? Is that Em crew marking vehicles cleared of passengers/life?

also I can't imagine the situation where the fog is so dense and people driving without any caution whatsoever to make that happen. ....but it looks like that SUV at the beginning probably veered into oncoming divided highway, smashed that semi-truck, which then fucked up the other two lanes seeing a wall of truck sweeping across the highway....through the fog.

shit, yeah I can see how bad it can be, so quickly. even everyone driving safely. just one person loses it at the wheel, literally falls unconscious, and veers off and into the news

I believe that's what the markings represent. Happened around 9:15am pacific time. Fog was bad this morning plus people driving 80+ mph in low visibility is always a bad combo.

right, it could still be lunatics driving in dense, terrible conditions. we've all driven the roads for years. we know the basic lunatic concentration on any given freeway or highway. at least one of those vehicles in that video was piloted by a lunatic, statistically.

I can't imagine driving excessively fast in fog but I was doing about 80 on the motorway once when suddenly I hit a massive cloud of smoke from someone burning something in a field. I genuinely thought that I was going to die. You can't see anything ahead so you want to slam the anchors on but you know that no one behind you can see you either so you can't slow down too fast. I was lucky that everyone else was really sensible and gently slowed down and that there were no crashes ahead. I can easily see how that sort of situation turns into an absolute cluster fuck.

If anyone is wondering what the arch is in the background in the vid, it's the high speed rail overpass going over the freeway.

Having dealt with that shit for 25 years, it’s also possible that they were driving in perhaps limited visibility…they ran into a “wall” of nearly impenetrable fog…the kind in which you can’t even see the end of your hood, let alone any vehicles in front of you.

Glad I wasn't in that mess. I hit the wall last week on my way into the office and I had to slow down to about 50mph. It was only thick for about a mile and at least there wasn't any roads coming onto the hwy. If anyone is unfamiliar with Hwy 152 in the valley, it's a highway that has farm roads that are just intersections controlled by a stop sign. There's a median between the east and west lanes that's also controlled, so you have to stop in the median as well. Super sketch when farming equipment and semis are pulling out in the fog. When it's foggy, I drive with navigation on so I know about when those intersections are coming up so I can slow down and pay extra attention. Since I just started my new job, I have to get used to the commute through some dense fog and shitty drivers.
