I'm looking to buy a set from Costco online. Anyone have any experiences with them? I'm 5'10" 170 lbs.

They're good for occasional use like maybe at camp or what not, but for everyday use they probably would lose their shape after a while.

Depends on what you mean by foam. High quality memory foam is amazing, lower quality memory foam is not something you want for the long run, and plain old foam is just more suited for packing boxes. Take a look at a high end brand like Tempurpedic and try to do a quality comparison with what Costco is selling. Theres some key data like the thickness and density of the various layers that make up a mattress.

I got a steal of a deal on a Tempurpedic 6 months ago and I am a happy boy!

They're ok, but if you can swing the extra bucks for a spring mattress I'd recommend it. Foam tends to compress over time and becomes less comfortable.

I have said this before and I will say it again LATEX mattresses are FTW. I was at Costco during the week and they had one of their memory foam models on sale for $499.00 for a queen. They had a sample of it about 3'x3' or so and it didn't seem to be a full memory foam, it felt pressing down like it was a 3" piece of latex or something then the memory foam. It actually didn't feel bad cause I have tried full memory foams when I bought my mattress in Oct and they all were too firm for my liking.

Hmm, if it's a hybrid foam mattress and not just regular foam, it might be good. Never tried any fancy ones.

My current mattress is a combo, latex top with springs etc. Its a Simmons world class. Now my pillows are Talalay Latex, I have used them ever since I was a kid, if you wanna try Latex to see how much it owns the pillows are an excellent way to try it out. Full Latex mattresses can be around $1500.00 for really good ones. Ikea has one for much less but never went and checked it out. My pillow is the one in this link on the right. Pillow

latex mattresses are amazing.
i've let several guests sleep in my bed just so they could try it, so far everyone is amazed at the comfort. i got mine from flobeds.com. pricey, but worth it.

Yeah man, I would of got one but couldn't justify another $500 over what I bought. I spent 3 damn days and like 200 miles of driving when I was shopping for mattresses in Oct. It it worst then buying a car, at least with a car you can see whats inside it for the most part. :)

How much of a "steal"?

My father owns a mattress manufacturing comapny, and memory foam is great, won't sleep on anything different if it's my own bed. Also have a latex bed in the house, and I agree it is also a great bed. It's much "springier" but still allows a simultaneous firm/soft feel.

When going memory foam, don't go down the wrong road thinking Tempurpedic is exclusive. Nothing about tempurpedic is proprietary, and if you do your research, you can get a tempurpedic quality, high density memory foam mattress WITH foundation for under $1000, using the same foam from the same manufacturer they get it from. I can attest to it every night I go to bed.

Someone mentioned the differing densities, this is a great point. Make sure you read what density it is. Companies who sell very cheap memory foam mattresses often use low density foam, and it's the same visco-elastic foam, so they aren't lying by calling it memory foam, they are just using a less dense, cheap memory foam. We make some memory foam beds that have varying layers of higher/lower density memory foam which provides a very customized feel, which you may or may not be able to find, but do your research.

Definitely do your research. I just read an article a couple weeks about mattresses; the conclusions of that article were:
1. Everyone is different. The most comfortable bed for one person is another person's nightmare. Try out the bed. Lay in it for 5 or 10 minutes at the showroom.
2. There's a lot of marketing bullshit. i.e. "This mattress has xxx springs, that one only has xxx springs." After a certain point, you don't gain anything. (Wish I could remember exactly where I saw the article.)
3. Quite often, regular furniture places have mattresses cheaper than at mattress shops.

This.

Bedding is probably the one area that everyone uses on a daily basis, but really knows nothing about, and thus yields people to be kinda "brainwashed" by said marketing. Pillowtops are still the biggest sham in the bedding industry, yet everyone seems to want it. Nobody seems to realize that pillowtops are cheap crap that breaks down faster than any other thing in bedding.

Just be smart, inquisitive, and as DrPizza wisely said, do PLENTY of research.

Be sure to actually go to the store and lay on the mattress you intend to buy for atleast 15 minutes. Putting your knee down on it and pretending to lay for a few seconds won't help. As stated above, Tempurpedic isn't the only high quality memory foam mattress, there are several offbrands, but just be sure you know what you are buying. Also if you intend to use your mattress regularly, a solid warranty and a company that won't be out of business in a few years will go a long way.

Oh yeah, and once you know what you are looking to buy, you can always shop around in store, online, and even craigslist... I got a deal on craigslist for a brand new Tempurpedic Queen for half of the mattress store price, I jumped on it knowing that I would have no warranty... Still worth it in my opinion since I couldn't find a comparable quality memory foam bed in that price range.

Yup, this. I got a knockoff Tempurpedic from Bob's Discount Furniture (which has a surprisingly nice showroom, despite the uber lame commercials), and it's utterly fabulous. I went from a regular bed (meh), to a pillowtop (oooh), to a memory foam (*angels sing*). The memory foam bed is like sleeping on a cloud. I love it! :D

2 things come to mind:
- It will get deformed over time. Starts to sink in and can potentially give you back issues.
- They suck in summer time. Friend just got a memory foam one and he is complaining that it reflects too much heat. This would very annoying to me.

Besides mattresses are selling pretty cheap right now, you can do some more shopping for something else.

What kind of foam should we look for?
