Foam insert for tires

I just heard of this. Michelin makes a foam insert for dirtbike tires called "Bib-Mousse". Sounds like a hair styling product but apparently it works. Why don't cars use these instead of those crappy runflat tires?

why don't cars use them? because cars weigh thousands of pounds and the weight on foam is distributed downward, not outward like pneumatic tires.

That's how some run flats work for cars, they have a hard plastic core inside the wheel that helps when the tire runs flat

Like BD said. Foam tires are soft and work best on soft terrain at low speeds, while at the same time being puncture resistant. It's not strong or durable enough to support the weight of a full size car. A road car needs harder tires to maintain fuel efficiency and high speeds on hard pavement.

Now that you mention it, yeah a car tire is pretty hard. It would have to be really stiff foam

When is the last time you blew a tire on a car? It's a real problem on a dirt bike...where you are in rougher terrain and are probably a good distance from real help.
