Flying tonight is now questionable...

Wonderful, after breaking my plans with my fiancé tonight to work, I may now not be flying because of the wind.

Right now the winds are gusting to 25kt (about 30mph) and are near the limits at which we fly customers (the helicoper can withstand more, but it becomes an unplesant ride very quickly as the wind speed goes up).

I still have to report into work, but if the winds keep up, I won't be flying and Thumper will still be mad at me, plus I don't get paid if I don't fly!!! :( :( :(

Sigh...

This is the life, eh? :D

wow.

Yes, I fly a Bell 206 (JetRanger) and a Bell 407 (similar, more seats and four blades)

Bell 407
This is similar to the 407 that I fly. Similar interior, panel, paint, and almost the same year.

We charge $500/hr for the JetRanger and $1,000/hr for the 407. The 407 carries 7 people and the JetRanger carries 5. The 407 is a much nicer helicopter, but 80% of my flying is in the 206 cause most people don't wanna pay the extra cash. :)

She refuses to come to the hanger, she doesn't want to watch me take off. :(

She is less than thrilled about my flying as it is, I don't want to push the issue. :(

What? The helicopter? Yea, it really is... Much smoother than the JetRanger and faster too.

The JetRanger cruises at about 115kt, the 407 does 140kt without any trouble. The 407 climbs faster, carries more weight and is 10 years newer. Much nicer panel as well. The extra power is really nice in the summer when the heat really cuts into the performance of these things...

Thats bull not getting paid but still required to show. Give the boss a call and lay down the law. You must makes the winds howl so that you can be with your loved one tonight. Sometimes the money isn't worth it.

That's how the aviation world works, you can't cancel a flight if the weather is questionable until 15 minutes before the flight is to begin.

I cannot honestly say the flight is really canceled since the wind is bad, but not horrible. We might still be able to go if it calms down enough, and of course if the pax are advised of the wind and choose to go anyway.

If the wind were gusting to 35kt, then it wouldn't even be an issue, but 25kt is doable without too much discomfort.

man... i love your job... I so much wanted to be a pilot when i was a little boy... but then my father bought me a computer and that changed all my plans. Now I am stuck writing (and speaking, most of the time) code that I don't even know will be used in the actuall software or if it will ever go beyond beta version.

So... wanna switch jobs?

Why not take up flying? You can do it you know, almost anyone can become a professional pilot.

Do you want to do something new? You can!

LOL, not for all the tea in China... The money you might make doing that will never compensate you for the joys I get flying. For all the complaining I do, I love this job more than you can imagine. The most fun you can have with your clothes on, bar none...

Dallas has a great skyline. Downtown, there's the "Jolly Green Giant" - a building off Elm St. which is etched in green neon. Also, the Renaissance building looks nice too - the "X" girders make it look interesting at night.

That's pretty cool. A relative of mine used to fly helicopters for the Indian Air Force, and he was telling me how it got crashed once. Do you fly planes as well, or just 'copters?

Yep, I fly airplanes as well, but not for a living.

I'm sitting up here at the hanger, no flying tonight, the winds were just too strong. :(

Thumper is out with friends and she doesn't answer her cell phone, or I'd go find her.

Grumble... :( :( :(

Sigh... I'm sad. :(

Happy New Year Everyone!

There's plenty to whine about if that job is with United Airlines.

For fixed-wing or helicopter? Do you have any flying experience? Are you interested in getting your private or commercial certificate?

I'd be happy to answer your question, but I just need those answers first to narrow it down a bit. :)

Grasshopper (thanks for asking me something about flying to cheer me up!)
