To the memory of Katrina.

Right now as it stands, the Flag of the United States is flying at half staff to commorate two events.

The Passing of William Rhenquist
and
The tragedy of the Gulf Coast.

In keeping with the rememberance to the losses, should the Flag remainup for the entire month, or return it to it's peak
after the official burial ceremony of Judge Rhenquist ?

In keeping with Flag Ettiqute would it be a proper salute to, on the anniversy of Katrina's devestation,
to Fly the Flag - at half staff and inverted, the official symbol of distress, in tribute to the distress our nation faced that day ?

Before to long we are going to have the flag at half staff ALL THE TIME.

Leave it at half-staff for a month. Don't fly it inverted - we as a nation are not in an SOS-type status such as to warrant that.

As much as I like the idea of flying the flag on the aniversary of Katrina, I'm not too sure how the people who've actually been affected by it feel about it?

Anybody else here have an opinion on that?

Is there any coating one can put on the flag that will allow it to keep continuously burning until Jan. 2009?

That makes me feel sad... the legacy of a 2200 year old civilization turned to ash.

My assumption is that he disposes of used flags for the US government or some other entity that does this. Burning is the authorized method of disposing of old flags.

Pity mostly.

Someone who gets their jollies off burning an American flag has deeper issues.

I revere the flag, because to me it's a symbol of our potential and high ideas, as well as being a symbol for the thousands of good people who have given their most for this great country... many of whom I have had the privelage of knowing. I think those that would burn it because of their political anger are reactionary, disrespectful, foolish, and deep down have little regard for America as a whole. IOW, pitiful.

OP: IMO, flying the flag upside down would not be appropriate. We are a nation in mourning, not dire distress.

EDIT: DonVito, you may be right, although I doubt it...

If I go to a Bush speach, and i start burning the flag, will I be arrested? Or does America actually practice the freedom they preach and let me do what I want?

It depends on the situation, but you might be escorted out, too. However, you could burn the American flag elsewhere as well.

I think that it's kind of funny.

will you join me in it then? We can do it at the next Bush speach and see if they will find it funny too.

Ok what if I go to New Orleans and start burning the flag screaming ''Praise Allah!'' will they arrest me then?

No, I don't keep the company of extremists and other crazy people.

I wouldn't be surprised if people are already planning on doing something like that in one of his speeches in the future though.

They might arrest you if people aren't allowed in New Orleans yet. You can run around your own street with a burning flag and screaming 'Praise Allah' or whatever other mythical sky daddy if you would like to do that.

But will I get arrested or attacked by Americans?

As long as your not hurting anyone, you can do what you want. The same as everyone else. How many flags you burn a year? I may be able to get a discount for you. :D

Flag burning in itself is not a crime. It's not exactly extremely rare.

You may be attacked by some Americans - I'd guess that it would be pretty random and would depend on the people around you.

It's legal to burn the flag. What exactly is your point?
