Im not up to date with the "gaming world" lately, but I was wondering...

Are there any good air combat type games out/upcoming?

Anyone remember FreeSpace 2? That's what im talking about, except newer =). I don't care if its air or space or what but i feel like playing one of those games.

Also, multiplayer would be icing on the cake.

Anyone have any suggestions?
 
Check this out, they re-did FS2's engine after its source code was released. There are a ton of camaigns made for the FS universe as well as Star Wars, Babylon 5, and so on.
 
There's Beyond the Red Line mod which has been mentioned here before. It's a Battlestar Galactica mod made with the Freespace engine.

If you want more of a sim there's IL-2 1946.

X^3: Reunion, which was a space combat and trading. A little bit like Wing Commander Privateer.

Do check this out - I've had a blast with it lately. Even the FS1 port iinto the now-upgraded FS2 engine was a blast.
 
I just noticed a video of Dark Horizon while reading about E3. I hadn't heard of this game before, but it looks very similar to Freespace and it's releasing next month too. It doesn't look very high budget, but any game in the genre is welcomed.
 
I can highly recommend Aces High 2, which I've been playing on-and-off for about 7 years. It's a WW2 flight sim that focuses strongly on realistic flight mechanics. There's a general arena you can fly any plane in, and plenty of weekly/monthly historical-based events. It's the sort of game that you'll never, ever master, but you'll have a blast improving your ACM.

X^3 Reunion is also a good Privateer-esque space combat/trading/exploration game.

But I really like the FS2 SCP and all its related mods.
