Hmm... I didn't consider renting a car. 😱 Since the company was going to reimburse the flight, that might be a good idea. But then again, I'm most comfortable driving my car, I'd probably prefer just driving that anyway.

8 hour drive? LMAO I did 15 hours down/17.5 up from Greenbrier County, WV to Jackson, MS last April for Master J.R. West's Hapkido seminar 😀 Best road-trip ever (and the barkeep in the hotel friggin' rocked, too!)

if company will reinburse then it's really your preference. If you feel okay driving that distance the day before the interview and staying at a hotel.
Driving between cities isn't that bad but if you get stuck in some rush hour traffic it might take longer then you scheduled. See if you can schedule your drive to avoid rush hours. in most cases the company will reinburse milage

I agree. If you're being reimbursed either way, fly. It may not be the most relaxing thing but you can at least concentrate on something a bit more interesting than the road this way or even rest up for your interview. 🙂

If he is like me, he would be far more relaxed after driving. I get extreamly air sick, and would rather drive 8 hours than fly just 1 hour.

I don't get air sick, but I do get a little nervous/anxious. And if I try to get any rest, I always get a kink in my neck. But, I've also never driven 8 hours straight before...

Drive...save money and probably time in the long run, and mention to the interviewer how you wanted to get a "feel" for the area by driving, and you saved money.

It wouldn't really matter to the company if they are reinbursing either way. Mileage at $.40/mile or more will make it cost the same, it might even be cheaper for them to recommend you renting a car then driving so they don't have to pay for wear and tear on your car, just gas. All of their expenses are tax deductable. 8 hours seems to be an ideal estimate, expect delays for traffic , bathroom breaks, and gas stops. Basically allow 10 hours and expect to travel the day before the interview. With a flight you might be able to still interview the same day or next morning and still fly back the next day. I am surprised that they scheduled an interview without planning travel, the sooner you book a flight the better for them.

My wife would have come with me, but she's hosting a party on Saturday and I need to be back Friday for work, so it would have been a wasted trip for her since we don't have much time to sightsee.

you are lucky compare to me. my school is 6 hours away from home and it takes me only one hour to FLY to school!!! unfortunately, i have a car so i commute back and forth on every break.

Yep. Just for kicks, I looked it up. If I drove down to Harrisburg, it would then go to Philadelphia, and then head down to Raleigh. I also looked up Greyhound, and that is also a 10+ hour trip.
