Fly or Drive?

I have an in-person interview in NC this Thursday.

If I fly, it will be $350, plus whatever it costs to rent a car.

If I drive, I just have the cost of gas, and its a straight route south. I was about to book the flight, then I was thinking - I could just drive for an extra 3 hours.

Hmm...

edit:
The flight itself is not a consistent 5 hours. I would be flying out of Williamsport regional airport, to Philadelphia, then to Raliegh. There will be a gap of waiting timing - so from departure to final arrival is 5 hours. I have not factored in checking in luggage or time it takes to get a rental car.

update:
Well, even though ATOT is overwhelmingly in favor of driving, my wife was able to convince me not to drive, and she'll just have to come down with me on another day when we can spend more than a day there.

I just booked a flight at expedia for $341. And fortunately, I was able to get morning departures with a total time of 3 hours one way, and 3 hours back. The VP is also arriving at the airport at the same time I am, so I might be able to hitch a ride with him to the office. 😎

are you already adding in the trip to the airport, waiting at security, etc?

He has to be. 5.5 hours in the air is NY to SF, so unless he can drive from NY to SF in 8 hours, he's factored it in. 😀

Nope. Regional airport is about 5 minutes away from our house. I'm just stating the time from departure to final arrival - nothing before or after.

almost has to be adding that cost.

ive never ever seen a flight take 3 less hours than driving not including time etc.

a flight from CLE to CHI takes 1.5 hours, or 8 hours driving. about 4 hours total incl. waiting.

Figuring that you could drive about 500 miles in one day that should only take about an hour and a half by plane.

500? Most people can drive a lot further than that in one day.

well you'd have to factor in getting to the airport an hour early, then getting baggage and renting a car can take upwards of an hour. by then you might as well drive.

sounds like it isn't a direct flight, correct?

When you factor in the time to get from your house to the airport, check in, sit around waiting for the plane, etc. I doubt there's very much time difference at all. Question is, would you rather sit around and read for that time, or would you rather drive?

He said 8 hours. That's about 1 day just in drive time as far as I'm concerned. At least if he wants to be rested enough to land the job he's interviewing for.

Drive like a fool, always fun🙂

Hmm... I didn't consider renting a car. 😱 Since the company was going to reimburse the flight, that might be a good idea. But then again, I'm most comfortable driving my car, I'd probably prefer just driving that anyway.

I have no idea what you drive, but I bolded the important part. 😉
