i recently shipped a monitor and UPS goofed and insured it for $2k when i intended to insure it for $200. it so happens that ups inspects computer packages with high insured value for proper packaging. the problem was when they opened the package and took out some of the packaging they didnt put the packaging back in when they closed the box and the monitor was damaged. the monitor worked but its base was cracked and had a rattling noise from inside. i filed a claim and through a non stop bombardment of bltching to everybody i talked to they agreed to refund me $289 for the monitor (twice as much as its worth) + $24 i paid for shipping. too top it all off they are now attempting to return the monitor to me - hopefully it still turns on, hell i can replace the base and fix the rattling noise no problem.

<< Check out what they did to my box :|

I shipped this box (containing 1 monitor) across the country. When it got there, the monitor didn't work. It was returned to me in the condition shown above. As far as my insurance claim - UPS says "insufficient packaging was used". That's BS it's obvious that the package was mistreated. When I piad for $150 worth of insurance. (it says so on my reciept), the guy at the counter did NOT tell me that it wouldn't qualify for insurance due to packaging. So, either he charged me fradulently for a service that he couldn't provide, or they're trying to screw me and blame ME for them dropping the monitor off a truck (I'm going with the second explanation).

What sohuld I do to get my $150 back. this is BS.

oh, and the box was BRAND NEW when I shipped it.

That is why I just picked up my new monitor local and paid the higher price.

<< I think you might have a case here...

UPS sold you insurence. Now that you need to claim your insurence they are telling you, that you do not qualify...

Let me get this straight...... UPS WILLING sold insurence to you, that you DO NOT qualify for......
SCAM, FRAUD, MISREPRESENTATION... call it whatever you want.....

Please fight them, tell them that you have hired an attorney and you will be taking them to court....

Good Luck..

thats not true at all. UPS has packaging guidlines that the shipper must follow. the shipper must provide factory packaging or two inches of packaging material all around the object. if the shipper doesnt follow those directions then UPS isnt accountable. the insurance kicks in when these guidlines are followed and the package gets damaged

Forget what you think.
1. If it was in original shipping container with all the shipping materials inside, that is so in your favor.
2. Just b/c they say no doesn't mean this is the end. Go through the steps of taking it to the next level higher, etc.
3. If you get emotional, it'll just wear you down. Just be determined, and logical. Document everything.

My story -

UPS and FedEx both break things. UPS seems to do it more often.

However, UPS constantly dicks me around about damage claims. Last one, I just gave up on.

The one claim I had with FedEx ($750) they paid VERY quickly and were EXTREMELY helpful and friendly about the whole ordeal. I was really impressed.

I think your case is weakened by your self admission that the manufacturer's packaging isn't exactly manufacturer's packaging. I guess that doesn't explain the hole ripped in the sides but I don't think you have a leg to stand on if you throw the "I used the manufacturer's box!" argument to speed your claim along.

good luck with this.

josphII - I disagree..... This about it...

You bring your monitor to a shipping center, you tell them you would like to ship this monitor.
UPS takes the box from you and weighs it. Then they offer to sell you insurence. They should not try to sell the customer insurence if they are gonna say the shipment does not qualify.

Anyway, besides that point.... I don't expect my packages to be wrecked like that.... You shouldn't have to pay someone to destroy a box and monitor....

Looks like UPS CSR sucks.... and trust me I already know their delivery service sucks... stick with FedEx

Without looking inside the box, how can they know if the shipment doesn't meet standards? Short of crap rolling around in there when you shake the box - from what notfred said, he put the monitor into the Viewsonic's styrafoam holders - nothing should rattle with that.

I guess it's not a "PerfectFlat" anymore.

Today, I packed an old pentium 100 desktop system. The computer weighs 27 lbs. The packaging weighs 13 lbs. I know how UPS is and i know this has to be able to sustain a drop from a few feet. Let's just say my hands feel like they are about to fall off from all the crumpling of newspaper.

Don't forget about the forklift holes :p
I'm pretty sure that's what's in the side of my monitor box from about 1.5yrs ago, can't believe the monitor wasn't damaged.
My new HD (a WD 1200JB no less) is sched for it's third del attempt later today, wish me luck.

Update:
Damn UPS driver didn't knock or ring the doorbell, just left notice on the mailbox again, this time I was home. Now I have to wait for another attempt on Tues.:|
