I've never gotten sick by it.

There is definitely a chance that the shot will cause flu-like symptoms. Personally, I haven't had an innoculation since I had the mandatory MMR innoculations before High School because I'm very, very, very frightened of needles. I've been living in dorms for the last two and a half years and I've not had anything more than a minor cold in that time though, so I'm not worried about it. The way I see it, if you have a tendency to get sick, then the shot is probably a good idea since even if you have a reaction you can basically control when you have it (by controling when the shot is) and then you don't have to worry about getting the flu later on. However if you don't usually get sick, then don't worry about it.

I get one for free at work every year. The worst reaction I've ever had is some body aches the next day and those might not have been from the shot.

The flu vaccine is prepared from the fluids of chick embryos inoculated with a specific type(s) of influenza virus. The strains of flu virus in the vaccine are inactivated with formaldehyde and preserved with thimerosal, which is a mercury derivative.

And they want to inject this crap into your bloodstream?

No thanks. :)

I get it every year. Some years I get what feels like a bruise around the area of the injection for a few days and my upper arm feels sore for a few days. However, that was because the nurse at my doctors office was frickin insane, she practically stabbed me with the damn needle. This year, there was a new nurse that was very gentle and I had no problems.

I also get some mild-flu like symptoms sometimes and I have gotten the flu in the winter even with the vaccine. However, it did not last nearly as long as it otherwise would have and it was likely my own fault because it always happened during a stretch where I was run down from a lack of sleep.

That said, it really is worth it. You won't even feel the needle and when you don't get the flu for a week or two, you'll thank yourself.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, it's technically your muscles, not your bloodstream.

The guy below me is going to say this:
