flu shot question

i just heard an ad on the radio that said, essentially, people who get their flu shots are less likely to die. (it was in the context of convincing someone to get it and suggested that people who do don't die of things like heart disease as much)
now, of course, the ad made it seem like "well, if i get my flu shot i wont die of some disease" but it seems more likely that people who get their flu shots regularly are just in general more health concious and probably take better care of themselves, therefore, people who get their flu shots are less likely to die of being lazy fat-asses.

did anyone hear this or a similiar ad? does anyone have the "medical journal from my doctors office" article that has this research?

Statistics 101

It's called a confounding (or "lurking") variable.

You are less likely to die from the flu after getting the shot than if you didn't get the shot. Being health conscious has nothing to do with it.

As with any illness, having the flu weakens your immune system which can leave you more susceptible to secondary infections. Infections like Strep (commonly causes strep throat) can destroy heart tissue. Many other infections can effect the heart and other organs. Not usually a big deal in young and healthy people, but why take the risk?

they didnt say anything about not dying of the flu.

edit: but thanks for the other pages. i figured it was just skewed stats. and creative language.

Four years ago I had the flu for three or four weeks. If I had been older or immunodeficient it could easily had been fatal.
