Is it to improve mileage or just for the sound they make? I wouldn't mind getting one for my truck, but need a better reason than to simply annoy the neighbors.

My shop teacher had one on his truck. It improves backflow, but the exhaust isn't really the limiting factor anyway--it's mostly the cat.

A muffler by itself isn't going to give any noticeably improvement to the performance of a car. All it will do is change the sound of the exhaust. Headers coupled with a performance exhaust can be quite benificial though.

Neither of these upgrades will improve fuel economy though.

That's kinda what I thought. My brother in law has it on his Titan, and it sounds nice but I have better things I could spend several hundred dollars on. Like gas.

It just depends on the factory system on whether or not it will improve flow/power. Most when dynoed with a complete cat back system improve ~10hp. It all depends on the factory setup.

Actually, a complete exhaust system that makes the engine flow better will most definitely improve gas mileage.
Makes the engine more efficient, and mileage will improve.

Not enough to make up for the cost of the mods, though.

And just a muffler won't do much....people put Flowmasters and Borlas on now for the same reason people used to put Glass Packs and Smithy's on back in the day. The sound.

They like the sound and they don't understand how poorly those chambered mufflers flow compared to their more straight through competitors.
