Nordstrom carries a decent amount of Eccos if there's one in your area. They also have a really liberal return policy if it turns out that you don't like them.

I find echo tends to be more expensive with no benefits over Rockport.

Allen Edmonds are where my money goes for higher end shoes.

Fuck Chinese/Thailand/Vietnam garbage leather corrected grain shoes. Buy American, buy real calf, buy Allen Edmonds.

It's funny how many people talk about Allen Edmonds shoes and I don't see that many around.

They don't fit me well. I actually like Clarks for my day to day shoes and I have some original Johnston and Murphys for suits and the like.

My brother wears them though. I don't know what is making them such a buzzword today, were they featured in some metrosexual magazine lately?

As far as Rockport goes, I haven't cared for them. I don't care much for Florsheim today, but did in the past when they actually had their own stores and fitters. They were a good bang for buck until I could afford more expensive shoes.

One of the things people overlook with higher-end shoes is being able to service them. My Johnston and Murphys have been re-soled a few times and look like new. Lesser shoes just wear out and there isn't enough of a 'carcass' to do anything with them.

Most people don't understand the quality of purchasing a nice shoe and would rather buy foreign made trash. I work with a lot of guys like that, guys who will drop 8k on a rolex but not buy a nice looking, long lasting, domestic made quality shoe. Instead they roll up in square-toe trash, it really shows how poorly they understand how to look good.

I only wear AE, except for my one pair of Peal & Co. I have about 8 pairs and love them.

Resoled many times, no issues. They do an awesome job. I had one coworker who had a AE Park Avenue for 25 years.

As far as the fit, it's probably because you didn't get them measured correctly. One great thing about them is that they have a ton of sizes, I wear 11.5 EEE and get them no problem. Can't find that in most other shoes. It helps to go to an AE store and get measured properly. As far as the leather sole, if you absolutely need to, you can buy inserts.

One thing with all of the padding, it absorbs sweat and keeps the stench, not true of quality shoes.

Well square vs round vs pointed toes are more a style than a sign of a good shoe.

I have no doubt I was fitted properly, I did not like the way the shoes fit me.

I am willing to bet many are wearing higher end shoes they bought clearance / etc that are the wrong size though. I see a lot of that going on, down here we have outlets everywhere.

Allen Edmonds has a variety of platforms that they use to make shoes. These platforms are designed for different types of feet. There's a good chance that while the one used in the shoe you tried on was not a good fit, they make a different one that would fit you well.

Also, if you know what size you need, you can get Allen Edmonds for pretty cheap (new) on eBay.

Most good shoes won't have square toes, there are some "stylish" exceptions but most sartorially adept people frown on square toes. On the other hand, cheap shoe makers LOVE square toes for some reason.

I would agree that most buy on clearance or something and fail to get properly measured and purchased.

I have one pair of AE, they cost 3-5x pairs of Rockports so that's why you don't see them around (even if you can tell what they are).

Yup square toes look like sht and are usually worn by kids. Not that I wouldn't hire someone who wore them, but I can't stand the look.

I'll have to check out AE, sounds like they make a quality shoe, been looking for one that can be resoled.

But after resoling, wouldn't 1 pair of AE's = >5 Rockports?

If you can wear one style all the time.

Maybe when I'm a millionaire but I have different style of shoes for all occasions (casual loafers, boat, semi-casual, formal, semi-formal, squarish, roundish, wing tipped etc) so I can't be wearing all AE heh.

My feet are a little wide...so that's why I said Florsheim or Rockport. They seem to be the only companies that makes wide consistently.

I can try Johnston and Murphey....

Allen Edmunds....yeah, a little out of my price league.

I received a nice pair of rockports and was apppalled by the quality. Black leather shoes that looked like hell after not even a year of casual wear to an office environment. The leather quality is terrible and is so scuffed up and discolored, one would think I went hiking with them. Even shoe polish only lasts a week or so before the leather discolorations begin showing. In addition, the sole had worn through and I had them resoled. Who resoles shoes that are not even a year old? I've never had a crappier pair of shoes...
