The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence will run ads beginning this weekend in newspapers in London, Chicago, Boston and Detroit that contend that visitors will now "face a greater risk of bodily harm in Florida."

Yah right - no risk of bodily harm in Chicago or Detriot.

So if some undercover cop tries to arrest you then you can blow him away and claim he didn't identify himself.
Perfectly legal.
Or if you get into an argument and you blow someone away you just have to say he took a swing at you. Forget the twinkie defense. It'll be the Phantom Menace punch defense.
Boy, oh boy. It's gonna be Dodge City in the Sunshine State.
And any mugger can blow you away and say you took a swing at him. This will allow more criminals to go free and more innocent people to be killed since a dead man can't speak up and say, I was just walking down the street when this guy pulled a gun on me and I fought back. Seems its an incentive to kill someone because you have a better chance to get away with a crime.
Although it certainly will give the juries a lot of leeway to "assume" minorities must have started something and the white guy was acting in self defense.

As someone with over 20 felony convictions, I love this law. Start a fight and you're losing? Just start shooting. Somebody talking smack and you are having a bad day? Start shooting. Somebody driving a car and gives you the stink eye? Shoot them in the face and say you were scared.

What a stupid law.

This is one area the right is right on target. Now if they'd just get behind Drug Decriminalzation, virtually overnight, all street crime, money laundering, gang violence, and the corresponding corruption in law enforcement that involves drugs would disappear. So would the huge drug prison sentences, which 50% of our nations 4 billion prisoners are detained on costing tax payers billions and use valuable law enforcement for non-violent offenders.

I guess you missed the part about law abiding...With 20 felony conviction you shoot a BB gun at a snake you'll be back behind bars..

Just out of curiosity... for all of you who are overreacting and denouncing the bill as recreating the wild west in Florida...

Everyone who has actaully read the bill and are not just reacting to the thumbnail sketch presented by the press, raise your hand.

I would beg to differ but I may be in Florida some time and you and your buddies may come by and blow me away, under this new law.

Can someone get a link to this law ?
As an outsider whose targeted by the ad campaign, what i understand right now is that you'll be able to pull a gun for any reason. Say i bump into you, i scratch your car in a parking lot with my door, try to get into slow traffic, that law has the potential to be misinterpreted.

But isn't there also a law that makes it a felony to target tourists ?!? You're weird, Florida.

Bleh. We heard the same sturm and drang in Florida when the concealed weapon law went into effect in '87 about how people were going to be pulling out their guns and blowing everyone away. That didn't turn out to be the case. The people most likely to be pulling a gun on someone and shooting them are those who legally shouldn't even have a gun in the first place, and to whom this law won't apply anyway.

Besides that, we already had this discussion when the bill was voted into law. I linked to the bill and showed it's not as simple as shooting someone for just scratching your car or threatening you.

Old Thread

I doubt that will prevent the hysterical ones from making this into something it's not though. Facts never seem to stop them from bulling on ahead.
