Traffic Stop Leads To Shootout With 70-Year-Old
FDLE Investigating Shooting
A 70-year-old motorist was shot by police Sunday when he allegedly opened fire on an officer after a routine traffic stop, according to Local 6 News.
Police said Lynwood Davis was pulled over near Lincoln Avenue Sunday afternoon for driving erratically and constantly using his car horn.
"The driver (Davis) shoved one of the officers back into his vehicle and fled the scene almost running over the police officer," Mount Dora Chief Randy Scoggins said.
Several hours later, officers spotted Davis near his Mount Dora home. When the police officers tried to approach Davis, he allegedly opened fire.
"The officers attempted to take him into custody and it turned out he was armed," Scoggins said. "There was an exchange of gunfire -- the officers were not struck -- the suspect was struck one time."
Davis was reported to be in good condition at Orlando Regional Medical Center.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting. Four officers have been placed on paid administrative leave, Local 6 News reported.
