In somewhat of a shocker, Republican Senator Mel Martinez announced his immediate retirement after already saying long before that he would not run for re-election when his term expired in 2010.

To some extent, I wonder if this has something to do with Martinez breaking party discipline and voting for Sotomayer. I am fairly sure Mitch McConnell called him to the
woodshed and that has to get old for moderate GOP members who are now in a distinct minority now held captive by irrational idiots.

But that is just my speculations.

And it hands the advantage to Florida Governor Crist who can appoint a temporary placeholder unlikely to oppose Crist when he runs for the Senate seat in 2010.

I thought Crist was a moderate too. But anyway, it'd be funny if Crist became senator and the religious right 'finds out' he's gay (supposedly it's the worst kept secret).

Even a placeholder gives Crist no additional advantage. Martinez wasnt running for reelection and that race has been between Crist and Rubio for a while now.

Your analysis doesn't make any sense.
Christ has a 60+% approval rating in FL.
Who the heck is going to challenge him if Mel Martinez didn't retire?

Why would it hand him the advantage? What if the person he appoints doesn't want to give up his seat?
