I guess black families shouldn't take this personally. (/s not required) Says it right on the permission slip. Of course now the Florida politicians who created this policy to stop discussions about race/black history and anything LGBTQ are now attempting to deny it. Waiting for a black family to object to an event because the speaker or the book's author is white.

So it starts off with "social media user posted". Making it no more valuable than before.
HOWEVER, it does include rather substantial corroboration.
I accept that they did this. I am still struggling to fathom the stupidity.

Coral Way staff sent those forms home because the school district’s attorney’s office determined that in order to comply with the Parental Rights in Education law, guest speakers require parental permission forms, said the district’s chief academic officer, Lourdes Diaz, at a Miami-Dade School Board meeting Wednesday.
@HomerJS How do they make this right?

It's less stupid but more nefarious. Republicans in Florida did this using individual citizens to enforce a policy of shielding their little white kids from the black and the gay. That's not hyperbolic a Republican lawmaker stated this when it comes to the discussion of slavery/race. It's the same enforcement mechanism they've used in other states to enforce policies people don't want (abortion).

Short term: Minority parents need to combine forces and overwhelm this fucked up system with complaints. Like a DoS attack in IT.

Longer term: Start a write in campaign to have these laws revoked. Put it on the ballot this Nov. I suspect the majority in the state don't want it.

Also longer term: Dems add this to the list of campaign issues. We won't tolerate bigotry disguised with backdoor policy.

FWIW, in the article OP linked, the "Florida Commissioner of Education" (gee that sounds like a FREE STATE title) claims such permission slips aren't required, so my guess is the school is doing this to shine a light on the absurdity of these laws in the first place.

Either way, this is what Florida voted for, so let them have it all. Pick your state accordingly.

Like it or not social media is the fastest way to draw attention to something now.

I wish you were right, but I'm 99.99999% sure you're not.

They repeatedly claimed there are no negative impacts to the poorly thought out policies and punishments they have put in place but because of the ambiguity of what they actually passed educators and districts are unwilling to take risks. So YES such permission slips are required because of their shitty policies to protect educators.

I used to read at my daughter's school with no permission slip, but earlier this year we were notified when an author came in to read his book. I don't remember it being a permission slip, though, just a heads up. But that may have also just been because you could preorder his book of you wanted to.
