SEFFNER — In a matter of seconds, the earth opened under Jeff Bush's bedroom and swallowed him up like something out of a horror movie. About the only thing left was the TV cable running down into the hole.

Tampa Area Man Swallowed by Sinkhole

Bush, 37, was presumed dead Friday, the victim of a sinkhole — a hazard so common in Florida that state law requires home insurers to provide coverage against the danger.

The sinkhole, estimated at 20 feet across and 20 feet deep, caused the home's concrete floor to cave in around 11 p.m. Thursday as everyone in the Tampa-area house was turning in for the night. It gave way with a loud crash that sounded like a car hitting the house and brought Bush's brother running.

Jeremy Bush said he jumped into the hole but couldn't see his brother and had to be rescued himself by a sheriff's deputy who reached out and pulled him to safety as the ground crumbled around him. "

Wow, just like that, sucked into your grave at 37, damm....

Hopefully he was crushed to death. It would be awful to be trapped in a sinkhole under a house with tons of injuries, slowly dying from starvation.

Wow what a terrible way to go. That was an issue in my city for a while but seems to have slowed down. Back in the day they'd fill mines back up with sand, but over time it would wash away.

What the hell is a sink hole and why would house (or city) construction on top of one ever be approved?

That sounds truly horrible

EDIT: NVM just read up about it. Wow that's messed up

I would guess he would asphyxiate on dirt if he didn't die from getting pulled.

I live in Tampa (20 minutes from where this occurred). Sinkholes are EVERYWHERE around here. Most of the time you don't even know one is there. It got so bad that insurance companies have stopped covering it because they were paying out to much in claims. When you buy a house you are basically taking a gamble. If you get unlucky a sinkhole will develop where your house is and your basically fucked.

You never know where or how you will take your dirt nap. In this case, quite literally. Like Ferris said " Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. "

How does a hole form in a concrete slab, and leave the rest of the house standing? Wasn't there rebar in the concrete?

What an ignoble way to go. "Police performed a cavity search and found you."

I don't think that is something they normally put in a foundation slab, although thats sounds like a good idea down there.

I'm amazed that they don't do that, for added strength. The additional cost for a home would be miniscule, compared to the cost of building the home.

Of course, then the sink hole forms, and instead of taking one room with it, it keeps getting bigger and bigger, undetected, until it swallows the whole house.
