A Florida man faces criminal charges after he pulled a knife and stun gun on a group of Muslim international students at a McDonald's.

John Jay Smith, 60, was arrested following the incident about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday at the restaurant in St. Augustine, just south of Jacksonville.

Smith allegedly got into a verbal altercation with two men, who were eating hamburgers in the parking lot, reports First Coast News.

The arrest report from the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office says Smith got into a verbal confrontation with the men, during which he pulled a knife.

One of the men, Omar Abdelmoaty, told the Washington Post he was with four other Egyptian students eating burgers and fries in the parking lot when Smith approached. All are Muslim and students from Egypt.

"We thought we were going to die,' Abdelmoaty told the newspaper.

The men went back to their vehicle as Smith reportedly yelled at them, "get out of my country you do not deserve to eat here." First Coast News reports one of the victims later told police Smith said “get the f*** out of here you don’t deserve American food.”

Smith, using an electric stun gun, then reached his arm inside the car in an attempt to shock two of the men, according to the report. The driver tried to pull away from Smith and backed into a pole in the parking lot, causing minor damage.

He had no choice. The Democrats/liberals made him do it.

Where is the NRA advocating for those Muslim students to carry weapons and shoot people like this?

If students has shot this guy guess who Trump would have sided with??

Trump definitely responsible for the climate that causes an uptick in shit like this.

The sad thing is that incidents like these are really just the 'logical' extreme of the mindset that winds up people like... well, a number of the conservatives here. Fox and Trump condition them to see all Muslims as ticking time bombs, and a few of them decide that merely seeing Muslim-looking people is cause for alarm.

I'm sorry, but a liberal publication giving a check to a still-dominant white culture isn't the same as Trump calling for a "total ban" on all Muslim immigration during his campaign (and implementing the largest ban he thought he could get away with while in office) or Fox using its usual "be scared" rhetoric. You don't routinely see black people threatening white people merely for existing.

Do we know what the initial confrontation was about before it descended into racism and xenophobia?

I don’t routinely see white people threatening black people for merely existing either. Good job with the rhetoric, got to "be scared".

Er, white supremacists? They're literally uncomfortable with the thought of living near black people. It's just a question of whether they want black people dead or 'merely' deported. And thanks to being emboldened by Trump, there's been a sharp uptick in hate crimes.

I can't believe you actually said something so profoundly ignorant.

I’ve got a feeling you live in a fairly racially homogenous area. I live in a city that’s 50/50 in terms of white and black demographics give or take a couple points and no one wants anybody dead or deported (where do you deport to? :confused_old:), and even here in the deepest of the Deep South you don’t find the true boogie man of the KKk that you are so scared of.

There’s absolutely racist. I’ve met many that are white, black, Asian, and rainbow. No doubt about that. But this cross burning white demon while I’m sure does exist in some backwoods shack somewhere is not this thing everyone fears around here.

It sounds like you need to actually go meet some black people and actually live amongst them rather than just reading articles. Not middle and upper class ones either who are just as far removed from the everyday poor black experience as a white guy is. It sounds like you have no exposure.

Indeed; if you had, even occasionally, perhaps it would have opened your eyes to what is commonplace in the USA, and your posting history would have a decidedly different flavor.
