Boycott possible in straw poll for Democratic presidential candidates

"The nine Democratic candidates for president signed a letter threatening to boycott a straw poll of Florida activists, but the show may go on."

This'll be interesting to see play out. Could be a non-issue but we'll see how much the activists in Florida push and if any desperate candidates break ranks.

Why even bother with Floriduh, as was proven back in 2000 Jeb has it sown in the bag for his brother

On more serious note, it seems that the Bush Administration is actually softer on Cuba than even the Clinton Administration. Do you think that after he wins the next election that he might consider normalizing relations with Cuba like we have with other Communist Countries like Viet Nam?

Actually I think the Party and Candidate activists want to show their support for the Democrats because of the perceived "problems" of 2000. They want to have their say first this time not last;)

It's gotta be a tough position for the Candidates to hold - especially the ones who are falling behind Dean. It'd be easy pickings if someone broke off and scooped up alot of the Florida Primary voters. It could dramatically affect the Primaries.

We'll have to wait and see:)

From what I read recently, Jeb is actually heading up his brother's re-election campaign in Floriduh. Interesting, I guess. Interesting thing about Cuba is that the House and Senate want to loosen travel restrictions on Cuba, while the White House is demanding tough restrictions and enforcement. Not sure how it will all get ratified in the end... or even how it will effect the Cuban vote in FL.

I believe the political ramifications withb the Cuban Population in Floriduh is the only reason why we haven't normalized relations with Cuba by now.

Any time the U.S. has a 50-year standoff with some other country, we should take a long, hard look at our policies. That goes for Cuba as well as North Korea.

Wow, only 44% of Americans over 75 approve Bush, 52 disapprove, 38 strongly disapprove, and 60% think the country is heading in the wrong direction.
And they vote in higher numbers and a lot of them live in Florida. Interesting dynamic for sure.

I don't understand the importance of this straw poll story. Why does it matter if they have or don't have that poll.

Well, first off - the Democrats in the Florida gov't want to have this straw poll to put their state out there as a big state in deciding the primary and wants it to be held before any real caucuses start. This would put them out there as the measurement tool. The DNC has already decided on the schedule of events but the Florida democrats want to get some of the opening shot press.
I'm not sure why the candidates are opposed to it for sure except for the fact that it is really only a contest of who can rally enough activists - not neccessarily all Democrat voters. Basically a popularity contest.

Now the reason that this could be interesting is that IF someone starts to campaign for this straw poll it would be going against the DNC(big no no;)) but they also stand a good chance at gaining alot of supporters in Florida and would have some unnofficial "momentum" they could carry into Iowa and New Hampshire. This would really favor one of the lesser candidates at this point if they decided to take the risk of DNC backlash, but could also all but cement Dean as the nominee if he came out of the straw poll with a commanding lead.

It's a gamble either way, because they run the risk of looking like they are "ignoring" Florida(atleast to the Florida voters anyway) if they don't participate.
