but then again...
It's Florida.

Ron DeSantis Gives Civil Immunity For Running Over Protesters In Florida

A new bill passed by the Florida Senate and proposed by Gov. Ron DeSantis will give people civil immunity for running over protesters.

The Orlando Sentinel reported, “The parts of the bill (HB 1 ) that most upset Democrats grant civil legal immunity to people who drive through protesters blocking a road; prevent people arrested for rioting or offenses committed during a riot from bailing out of jail until their first court appearance, and impose a six-month mandatory sentence for battery on a police officer during a riot.”

People could still be criminally charged for taking their car and mowing down protesters who are using their First Amendment rights, but in Florida, the driver will not be able to be sued for civil damages. Florida Republicans claim that they are preventing violence by denying protesters bail and allowing them to be run down, but almost every protest in the country is peaceful. The few that make it onto television are the ones that feature violence.

The bill is an attack on the First Amendment by a governor who has 2024 presidential ambitions and is willing to encourage having protesters hit with cars if it gives him a boost in the Republican presidential primary field. It is hard to imagine this law making it through the court system without being overturned. Civil immunity for running down protesters takes the Republican attack on the First Amendment to a new level of deadly.

I didn't mean to run over every single Nazi protesting that day. I feared for my life and was just trying to find my way out. They kept blocking my view with their flags and their stupid faces.

Nice... Reminds me that California was a total open carry state...

Until the Black Panthers started carrying M1 carbines..

The license is a knife that cuts both ways.

My favorite was when Floridian bible thumpers (iirc) started in with trying to make religious text part of the curriculum. Well, that means that other religions gained the same ability, and lo the Satanists came out with a (surprisingly good) text for kids! The bill or whatever it was went nowhere after that.

This law is mostly just performative. They're "stickin' it to the libs." Nothing more.

The notion that you are considering driving through protestors and you decide to do it because you can't be sued even though you could be sent to jail for murder is absurd. Most people are judgment proof anyway, and never pay a dime for running someone over unless they have insurance.

These repug legislatures should just pass laws which are resolutions that say things like "you're PWNED libtards! Fuck yeah!!!!!" It would achieve the exact purpose of the vast majority of everything republicans do these days.

Good. Fucking.Riddance.

This bill was pretty much spot on of exactly what is needed.

Want to protest? GREAT! Get a permit like everyone else and march it up.

Want to block interstate highways? You deserve to be roadkill. For anyone who disagrees, wait until you or your spouse are the ones that are dying on the way to the hospital.

Fuck off, traitor. People don't need to consider the feelings of a fascist fuck like yourself on what are acceptable means of protest.

Please provide data showing that this is an issue in America. How many people die per year due to lack of hospital access resulting from protests blocking roadways. Or is this another one of those political strawmen conservatives like to slay.

Its also interesting that in a single post you try to pretend that your concern stems from a desire to protect lives while simultaneously exhibiting a complete disregard for life. Does it give you whiplash having that level of discord?

People are fascists. I agree sometimes protestors do dumb shit, it should be up to well-trained and reasonable police officers to be called in to do their duty, not give citizens free reign to kill or maim people for what ultimately is a low-level crime. But the GQP is gonna fascist because that is what they are. Horrific, irredeemable deplorables. Every nation in modern history that has gone down a dark path, from fascism in europe to stalinism in russia and maoism in China, all needed large swaths of easily corruptible deplorables. This is our GQP.

There are going to many dumb people, this is Florida after all, who don't realize this law is only for civil damages and think they have immunity to kill protestors on the street. Just look at the title of this post. And it's not like they are going to go look up if there was a permit filed before driving to the site.

I don't see it this way as Florida is being completely corrupted by the GQP - they will take it easy on any drivers who take out protestors on the criminal side themselves, whether by not pressing charges, or lowering the charges, or declining to prosecute or basically legislating from the bench.

That will entirely depend on where it happens. Because it isn't a state level decision. The decision is made by county DA's.

Protests don't usually happen between the trailer park and the Cracker Barrel. They usually happen in major cities.

So this law really hasn't changed anything on the criminal side, because it's always been that way.

The Satanists really are the greatest. The name just drives Christians complete wacko. Never mind it was a good and wholesome book.

While personally I would never join the Satanists, I have seriously considered the pastafarians.

The GQP got close to overturning the election in a couple states. I suspect they aren't dissuaded by messing with criminal prosecutions of those who do good deeds like running over antifa marxist muslim terrorists.
