This might be old news, I don't know. But I got an email from a friend a couple days ago, looked into it and found that I did not have my driver's license information "blocked".

I didn't know that the FL DMV allowed for virtually anyone to view my personal information.

Here's a blurb from http://www.hsmv.state.fl.us/ddl/dppa.html

"The law allows individuals or companies in certain circumstances to obtain your information. Those exemptions are for use in connection with bulk distribution of surveys, marketing, or solicitations if you have not chosen to prevent this use."

WHAT?!?!? You mean the DMV is going to ALLOW me to get spammed unless I say otherwise?

Thank goodness someone sent me this link:

https://www.hsmv.state.fl.us/dlstatus.html

Here I was able to log in using my driver's license number and choose NOT to be added to any "lists". I hope that's all there is to it! 😀

I suggest that if you hold a driver's license in Florida, you look into blocking your information. If you do not live in Florida, you may want to see if your state has a similar arrangement and post it here.

Bump for the Floridians that might have missed this.....

For others: Do a search on Google under "Driver Privacy Protection Act". I've found that this applies to ALL other states! They might not be as easy to block, though!

Good info jonnyGURU, thanks 🙂

Here's what I got from a NYS FAQ, I guess this is good for me correct?

Note: The DMV does not release photographs, Social Security Numbers, telephone numbers, medical information or disability information. This information is not available in NYS even to those persons who request the information and have a permissible use.

any drawbacks to blocking it? Maybe you can't be verified for something you are applying for because of this and it ends up hurting you (at least until they can validate it some other way, which could take time)? anybody know?

More Info

Maybe. I for one am not too concerned. A social security number can be used to pull a credit report if you have to apply for credit. Think about it..... Do you have to be a licensed driver to buy a house? Do you think Stevie Wonder has a driver's license? 😉

Wasn't worried about the ability to get to the info, just the ability to get to it in a (real-) timely nature. After reading my more info page I'm comfortable removing it. Based on that pge, if it's a legit credit place they'll be able to get access to what they need still. So, I don't see any harm in it. Not sure I'll see any benefit either, but, who cares. Thanks for the link/info.
