Florida candidate's diploma photo doesn't appear to be accurate, university says

Why do people think stuff like this is going to "slip by"? Do they really think they are outsmarting people? It doesn't even appear to be close to being right

A Florida state house candidate's college degree has been called into question -- by the very university that she claimed to have graduated from.

Melissa Howard, a Republican who is running for the Florida House of Representatives District 73, claimed to have graduated from Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio.

But last week, FLA News reported that Howard didn't have a college degree from Miami University.

In a statement responding to FLA News, Howard's campaign said the story was an attempt by her opponent in the primary to "hurt Melissa or her reputation within the community," and that she graduated with a degree in marketing.

The 46-year-old candidate later posted what FLA News described as a partial college transcript, as well as pictures of her posing with a diploma on her Facebook page. The images were no longer available on Sunday.

n response to her photos, FLA News, which calls itself "the conservative choice for Florida news and politics" briefly rescinded its story.

But Miami University also told CNN and other news outlets it has no record of Howard earning a degree there. The school said that Melissa Marie Fox (Howard's maiden name) had attended Miami University, from August 1990 to May 1994, but she never graduated.

The university also pointed out a few critical flaws on the image of the diploma that Howard had briefly posted on social media.

The image showed that she received a Bachelor of Science in Marketing degree, but the university said, "We have no such record of a degree." That's because the university says its degree for marketing majors, both then and now, is called a Bachelor of Science in Business.

Also, Howard's major while she was enrolled at Miami University had been retailing, and the degree for that program would have been a Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences, according to the university.
The picture of the diploma included the signatures of James Garland, who was the president of the university in 1996, and of Robert C. Johnson, who was actually the dean of the graduate school, which would not have been the proper school, the university statement said.
The university counsel said in a statement to CNN that the picture of the diploma "does not appear to be an accurate Miami University diploma."

Considering the fact that she not only lied about getting her degree (a fairly common thing) but apparently actively faked the physical diploma as well, her campaign's response blaming this on her opponent is beyond bogus.

But in the days of Trump apparently GOP politicians feel they have a privilege to lie.

Is there a penalty for presenting forged documents? Can the University sue for defamation? The Republican party?
(they are losing a spot on ballot.)

If you want a historical analogy: it's as if the 19th-century Know Nothings not only got significant power, but managed to infiltrate another political party and rot it from the inside. And just like the Know Nothings, their practices aren't sustainable in the long run. I hope.

She even lied about her NRA rating...😳

Allies of Gregory have been blasting Howard in mailers, saying she “isn’t telling the truth” about her rating from the National Rifle Association and that “her claims just don’t add up.” Howard said on Facebook she received an A grade from the NRA but the organization’s Florida lobbyist, Marion Hammer, said that’s not true.

“She has a B,” Hammer said in an interview. “She has never been given an A.”

(let Sarah Palin speak to you🙂 You betcha! The GOP base loves their guns and those who are loved by gun industry's lobbying arm.
It's not like I didn't know some politicians are super proud of the grade they receive through purchased influence but I didn't know they bragged about it. Those grades (especially the A's & B's) usually have a crumb trail leading to bought votes and influence that they'd rather not have scrutinized.

Interesting. A candidate for public office appears to have falsified their academic credentials. The respected academic institution that the political candidate claims to graduated from states that they have no record of their graduation, and that the diploma the candidate posted to social media is a falsified document. The candidates responds by taking down the falsified document and retorting that this is a smear campaign and fake news.
If anyone can look at this event and somehow not see what's wrong with Trumpism, well.. they're just not being honest with themselves.

That's one of the biggest problems but this isn't a situation where they are unaware of what they're doing. They know they're lying to themselves. They're using all of this as an excuse to be their ugliest selves.

Because many do

The results of an "it's OK to cheat as long as you don't get caught", morality is relative, profit only matters corporate culture that is prevalent in all facets of society today.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/your-md-may-have-a-phony-degree/

High school journalists in Pittsburg, Kansas, recently uncovered a troubling and at times dangerous trend that's far more prevalent than realized. They garnered national attention for their discovery about the credentials of their school's new principal.

"We stumbled on some things that most might not consider legitimate credentials," Trina Paul, a senior and an editor of the Pittsburgh High School newspaper, told the Kansas City Star. Within days of the students publishing their story, principal Amy Robertson had resigned from her $93,000-a-year position. She said she obtained both master's and doctorate degrees from a Corllins University, whose existence the U.S. Department of Education has no evidence of, and reportedly swiped a commencement photo Wake Forest University in North Carolina used for its own marketing,

Robertson is far from alone in touting a pedigree that includes a degree from Corllins, described in multiple news stories as a diploma mill. A recent search of LinkedIn found 745 people, including public-safety workers, lawyers, engineers, educators and federal government employees, holding degrees from Corllins.

The career-oriented social network's listings of Corllins grads include a computer scientist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, a personal assistant to the Deputy Secretary of State in Washington, D.C., an executive director of consumer and community banking at JPMorgan Chase (JPM) in Texas and a flight nurse with an air evacuation team in the Lone Star State.

The NRA one is often bragged about in GOP campaigns especially at the primary level.

There does appear to be an exerted effort to see how far they can push the tolerance of the base. There seems to be no bottom to what they'll believe and accept.

The base doesn't even care. If her other lies are pleasing, they'll forgive her this one. They expect their politicians to lie. Witness Trump love.
