Miami-Dade Public Schools said schools have been locked-down, meaning children will be kept in their classrooms and parents will not be allowed to pick them up.

False info. I am in S. Florida right now and I work for Broward School District Office. Check this out from our Sun Sentinal newspaper:

Sun-Sentinal

In Miami-Dade County, students were being held at schools for safety reasons due to large numbers of traffic signals being out due to power failures, said Quintin Taylor, media relations specialist for Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

Students were only being released to the care of a parent or guardian, he said. All school transportation was suspended due to the non-functional traffic lights, he said.

Unfortunately, I think my place is without power so I can look forward to a boring night when I get off work. :(

My colleague's house in Kissimmee is out of power up here in central part of Florida. I'm okay here in Orlando. From what I heard, it's a cascading power outage.

I just got this notice from the school district:

- At 1:09pm today, a massive equipment failure took place at one of FPL's substations in Miami-Dade County. In accordance with FPL's safety and security procedures, it tripped the system and caused widespread outages across much of FPL's system and elsewhere in Florida.

- At the height of the outage event, approximately 700,000 customers were without service. As of 2:30pm, approximately 200,000 FPL customers remain without electric service as FPL works to make sure power plant generation is available to serve customer load requirements.

- FPL estimates that almost all customers still without power should be restored by 4:45pm, with the remainder of customers still without power restored by 6pm.

This sounds like it will end much better than what I initially anticipated.

Huh, if this was all in Miami I wonder what killed the power in a (very small) area of Tampa...

I'm in the middle of this alleged chaos in the Fort Lauderdale area. Had I not read anything here I wouldn't have known there is a power outage. Full power ahead. AC blowin', fridge crankin' out cold beers. What's the problem?? There ain't no stinkin' power outage.

btw, the reason for the outage was determined to be a Nuclear Power plant in South Miami being shut down for safety reasons. We do not know what those reasons are.

That seems pretty unlikely unless the utility down there is idiotic, utilities are required to ave spinning reserve equal to their largest unit. Nuclear plants and coal plants shut down every down on a daily basis and don't cause blackouts unless someone REALLY REALLY screwed up. Especially not with this weather, maybe on a 105 degree day in the summer, but the load right now shouldn't be stressing anyone.

:Q

A nuclear plant SCRAMs every week somewhere in the USA, its not a big deal when it happens...

EDIT: man FPL fucked up big if they let this cause a blackout although Florida is in a bad situation somewhat because they have poor grid connections to the rest of the USA since it can only go through the narrow corridor from one direction isntead of being surrounded by other utilities like other parts of the country.

EDIT2: sounds from the article that it isn't clear whether the nuclear plant SCRAM caused the grid disturbance or that the grid disturbance was caused by the storms and is what tripped the units offline to begin with.

This is what the storms did in Tallahasse late this morning. next door to me

I live immediately to the right of this pic. The dirt/root chunk is 6 ft tall. Had 2 firetrucks, utility co. and tv news. My power and internet is fine. Hers next door, not so much. You can see her power line at the right of the pic going down under the tree.

Yeah, I was watching the live footage on MSNBC. It was a huge intersection with everyone squeezing by. Where are the traffic cops?
