A gunman holding hostages inside a South Florida apartment complex killed six people before being shot to death by a SWAT team that stormed the building early Saturday following an hours-long standoff, police said.

A spokesperson for Hialeah Police Department told CBS News that police got a call around 6:30 p.m. Friday that shots had been fired in a building with dozens of apartments in Hialeah, just a few miles north of Miami.
Although a crisis team was able to briefly establish communication with the man, Sgt. Eddie Rodriguez told The Associated Press talks eventually "just fell apart" with the gunman, who was holding two hostages on the fifth floor. Both of them survived when officers stormed the building, fatally shooting the gunman during an exchange of gunfire.
"They made the decision to go in there and save and rescue the hostages," he said.


The dead bodies of three women and two men were found at two different apartment units inside the building, which Rodriguez said was in a "very quiet neighborhood."

Wonder what the timeline was. Seems like he killed a few people then took hostages spurring a negotiation team to camp outside the complex with a SWAT team as backup.

I think it was a mistake to make the Z case about race so quickly. That said, I don't think there's a need to make snarky comments about race every time there's a crime. All it does is perpetuate the problem. Black people are not the only people who need to get over that case. It's sparked quite an unfortunate reaction from many white people as well.

Looks like he purchased the gun legally.

Velazquez confirmed that it was the same gun used in the shootings. It’s unclear where Vargas bought the hundreds of additional rounds police found in his possession and in his apartment after it was all over.

Have to wonder if the prior steroid use affected him.

Jorge Bagos, who also worked out with Vargas, told the Associated Press that Vargas had mentioned exercising as a way to release his anger. Bagos said Vargas complained of bad experiences with women, and blamed his hair loss on steroid use.

It isn't just blacks selling illegal firearms, but they call it the black market for a reason (is predominantly blacks doing the selling).
