So,I have a floppy just installed, but the light won't turn off, and therefore it won't recognize whether or not I have put in a disk...thoughts?

IIRC, it means you plugged the ribbon cable the wrong way. Turn it over 180 degrees and try it then. The light should now operate properly.

Yep. Classical mistake, cable on backwards. Mind the colored ribbon - this goes onto the side that says "1" on the drive.

btw, as long as the drive is in that state, it'll erase all disks you feed it, write protected or not.
