basically, i want to know if i should order the floppy option for the 600m. is it an external USB drive? or what?

i checked on pricewatch and i can get a mitsumi USB external floppy for around $40... dell wants $50.

answers, advice? thanks

600m floppy is internal. Modular unit that swaps with the optical drive.

If you need a floppy at all, I guess I'd get it. I've always preferred internal units over external ones. But I guess it's just a matter of taste.

since dell's internal floppy takes up the modular bay which would entail swapping out the optical unit, i'd say that a usb drive would be much more convenient. with enough online searching (or a trip to fry's), you can get an external usb floppy drive for cheaps.

The floppy drive can be inserted into the mobile bay or it can be a external drive by using the supplied usb cable.
